Cost £265.00 ‘Singing is Fun’ is for anyone who loves to sing. If you want to learn many interesting songs and improve the singing voice as well, then this is the course for you. There will be a focus on Christmas songs. An exciting course with plenty of songs for everyone. Learn how to breathe correctly, improve posture and sing out with joy. We will learn different styles of songs, maybe in parts and other languages! A fun and stimulating course to build the singing voice, gain confidence and enjoy the music! We will study songs, maybe in parts and also try out solos if needed. Encouragement will be given in all aspects of singing, breathing and general musicality. Singers of all levels are welcome. Kate will supply the music for the course only. If you would like to bring a solo piece remember to bring a spare copy for the pianist! 156.362 Watercolours: Atmospheric Landscapes – Pat Gove Cost £265.00 As a medium, transparent watercolour paint lends itself to creating mood and atmosphere in landscape painting. You will try and capture such effects by looking at how other painters have achieved it in their pictures. The course will include such subjects as morning and evening skies, rain, mist, snow and sunsets. You will be working from photographs and work done by watercolour artists. Suitable for those who already have some experience in watercolour painting. There will be no additional costs for students who bring their own materials, although it should be noted that anything provided by Denman will be charged as used (estimated up to £10). Preparation for the Course: * Paper: Saunders Waterford 140lb NOT surface - suggested size 10" x 12" * Brushes: Round - Pro Arte, series 100 size 12 - these may be borrowed from the college Rigger - size 2 Flat brush (one stroke) suggested size 1/2" * Paints - W & N tubes - suggested colours: Cadmium yellow, Permanent rose, Ultramarine blue * Pencils - 2B and 4B * Putty rubber * Masking tape (1") * Board (slightly larger than size of paper) - not essential as college can provide these Please bring with you any watercolour brushes, paper and paints if you have them. Give yourselves a weekend of respite care in the midst of this season's frantic rush ! Enjoy a tranquil time contemplating, listening and understanding how artists and musicians have represented the episodes surrounding Jesus' birth in many various ways. Explained, and some even demonstrated, are the mysteries of the techniques of tempera, fresco and oil paint, symbolism, iconography, linear perspective, compositional devices, sources of rare pigments........to name but a few ! To augment your pleasure, many of the beautiful images will be held on screen while you listen to appropriate music. There will be an opportunity to explore what the composers were up to, and why it works so well. Do not miss this chance of a quiet, serene and even spiritual experience. 156.364 Christmas, Oxford and the Colleges - Anna Steven Cost £290.00 Explore how Oxford and its colleges bring the Christmas story to life. The course will include visits to colleges and churches in the quest to explore many age old traditions and some more contemporary ones too. Bring warmth to your Christmas preparations with a visit of good cheer! Following a visit to the oldest museum the Ashmolean Museum, we will explore the heart of Oxford University with a visit to the Bodlian Library and the current temporary exhibition. We then pay a visit to Jesus College to have lunch and a tour of the college. Then following a visit to the Sheldonian Theatre we stroll through the Victorian Covered market and City centre to see Christmas lights before the glorious choral evensong at Christchurch Cathedral. The whole day will be spent in Oxford but regularly breaks will be planned. The visit will take place regardless of the weather so please bring sensible shoes and appropriate attire. 156.365 Stained Glass: A Beginner's First Designed Panel - Anna Conti Cost £265.00 A introduction to stained glass of all sorts of colours and textures. Make your own stained glass panel or mirror (approx. 30 x 25cms) using traditional stained glass techniques. You will learn how to draw a simple abstract design, select and cut glass, lead up your panel and learn how to solder. You will then "cement" and polish it ready for hanging up or installing if you wish. A selection of designs ideas will be available if you feel artistically challenged so no need to worry. If you wish to make a panel to install, make sure you have the size of the frame that it will be fitted into! There will be an informal session in the evening focusing on secular stained glass along with a few anecdotes about Annas’ experiences in the glass world! This does not include red and ‘antique’ glass but this can be bought at trade price and is normally under £3. This course is a relaxed exploration of the durability of paper, with the rewarding result of turning discarded magazines into something not only very unusual but useful as well! Paper when screwed up many times becomes pliable, enabling it to be stitched, and manipulated into a stylish, material lined designer item. Bring your colourful magazine pages and let your imagination run riot! An ideal course for both beginners and the more experienced. Only basic sewing machine knowledge is required to produce a beautiful bag, while the more experienced in free machine stitching may add extra embellishments Page 3 of 4 GENERAL INFORMATION SHEET PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE COMPLETING THE APPLICATION FORM CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS, FRIDAY 30 January 2015 DEPOSIT: Following the closing date, successful applicants will be asked to pay a non-refundable deposit. If places are over-subscribed, a ballot will be held. ACCOMMODATION: Please indicate any accommodation requirements. Some bedrooms are located on first and second floors, only accessed via a staircase as the College does not have lifts. Most residential buildings involve a walk of around 100 yards. The College has three bedrooms adapted for students with disabilities. MEALS: Full board. Please indicate any special dietary requirements, including food allergies and special diets. The Chef is very happy to meet with you on arrival at the college to discuss your requirements. Off-site Refreshments: When a residential course involves visits out, groups are provided with a selection of sandwiches from which to choose, on the first full day. For subsequent days, students are asked to indicate their preferred sandwich fillings on a form provided on arrival. If a course involves the purchasing of food or refreshments by students when off-site, this has been taken into account when calculating the course fee. COACH TRAVEL: There will be two Federation coaches starting from different parts of the county, with the first pick-up at approx 10.30am. All times will be confirmed at a later date. See application form for details of the ‘pick-up’ points. On Friday 27 November, we plan to arrive at Denman College at approx 3.00pm, in time for afternoon tea at 4pm. We depart after lunch on Sunday 29 November at approx. 1.30pm. Please note, we cannot offer a cost reduction for members not travelling by Federation coach. CANCELLATION: Denman strongly advise insuring against cancellation. No one can be sure that they will not have to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances, including illness, and the College must adhere to its cancellation policy. Information on a company called Cancelsure will be sent to you on confirmation of a place should you wish to use them but please note this is not a recommendation. There are other companies who offer this kind of service. It is also advisable to check your own insurance policy to see whether you are already insured. Cancellation Policy On cancellation, in addition to the non-refundable deposit, cancellation charges will be made as follows: 8-6 weeks before course start date - forfeit 50% 6-4 weeks before course start date - forfeit 75% Within 4 weeks of course start date - forfeit 100% If you hold a Federation or WI Bursary, the Bursary element of you fee can be transferred to a different course or another member (within the same programme year) should you be unable to attend, however this can only be done if we receive written confirmation from you Federation or WI. The non-bursary element of the fee is subject to the cancellation criteria above. The cost of Federation coach travel cannot be refunded unless your place is filled by a replacement.
