ABC Book of the 1960s and 1970s
Research-Based Project
DUE DATE: Monday, Nov 30th
Young children often learn new information through the use of ABC books. It is a helpful way
of associating key words and ideas with a particular letter. In this project, you will be working
on the creation of an ABC Book of events from the 1960s and 1970s. This would include
topics in the Civil Rights Movement, the war in Vietnam, any event from the Kennedy,
Johnson or Nixon years and the Watergate Scandal. The idea is simple – create a book
written at about a grade 2 level that identifies one key word related to the time period for
each of the 26 letters of the alphabet.
This project should be completed as much as possible in class. We will work in the
computer lab for two days. The final product is due via email or in print on Monday,
November 30th (the day we return from break).
Using your textbook, the internet and other resources, identify 26 key concepts
associated with the 1960s and 1970s…one for each letter. Develop a plan for creating
the book (Word, Publisher, Google docs, prezi, online site, etc). Use the requirements
below to create a high-quality product.
Project Requirements:


There should be a title page which includes a decorated cover, a creative title and your name.
There should be a Table of Contents listing all 26 letters and the word(s)
chosen for that letter.
Each page should contain a separate letter with a word, paragraph and
picture.
Choose a word or term that relates to the 1960s and/or 1970s for each
letter. Be sure to completely explain how your chosen word/term
relates…you ARE NOT just giving a definition. Explain using words a
second grader would understand. You should estimate that the
summary will take about 1/3 to 1/2 of the page.
Find or draw an illustration for each word or term. Illustrations can be
drawn, traced, copied, cut from magazines or newspapers, or done on
the computer.
Final products can be emailed to Ms. Burgess (aburgess@wcpss.net) or
a print copy can be turned in. If you turn in a print copy, all pages must
be securely fastened together using a binder or other secure means. DO NOT use paper clips or staples. They
will not hold a book securely together.
Remember that spelling and grammar count.
