Ka nui te mihi ki a koutou - Greetings everyone
Maungaturoto Primary School Welcomes
Callum Booth & Hannah Hodgson
Welcome to Term 3 
Welcome back to the start of term 3. It has been great to see the children settle back into their
work after the holiday break and nice to hear about some of their exciting holiday adventures.
During the holidays we had our school playground area upgraded with new timber surrounds.
We will soon be filling the playground areas with new bark (for safety). The new building work
will help prevent the bark from washing away during heavy periods of rain. The playground
areas will remain closed until the work has been completed.
Classes are now busy planning their items for Parents and Grandparents day that is scheduled
for week 8. Please let the grandparents know the date if you haven’t already done so.
This term the Board of Trustees will be looking at improving our school signage. We often hear
comments from visitors regarding how difficult it can be to find our school. The signs will be
professionally designed and placed in prominent areas within the town including a large visible
sign that will be located up high on the gable at the end of Room 4.
Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori

Greetings everyone,
This week we have been celebrating Maori Language Week. Here at Maungaturoto Primary we
are very fortunate to have Whaea Mina Paikea working as a specialist teacher of Te Reo
Maori. This provides every child with the opportunity to have a weekly Te Reo Maori lesson. The
Te Reo lessons are linked to the classroom programmes and our teaching staff also participate
in the lessons.
This term our Kapahaka group will be performing at grandparents day and parents day.
2015 Enrolments
If you have a child who will be starting school next year (2015) could you please complete the
attached pre – enrolment form and return it to the school office as soon as possible. This
information will help us with our planning for our 2015 junior classes. If you require any further
information please feel free to contact the school on 431 8106 or feel free to pop in for a chat.
Term 3 Major Theme – ‘Mission Nutrition’
One of our 2014 goals is to include student voice within our curriculum planning.
Towards the end of Term 2 a group of teachers and Year 6 students were invited to
participate in a Health (Hauora) curriculum review. The students were asked to
discuss and contribute their ideas based on the following questions:
What do you know about Health? (including what they have learnt in the past)
What would you like to learn about Health?
From the student responses it was decided that our Term 3 major curriculum focus
(Health & Well-being) will be targeted towards understanding personal heath and
physical development using health and nutrition as a learning context. (i.e. students
will share ideas, observations and gain knowledge and understanding about food
and nutrition and the importance of regular exercise)
Using SOLO Taxonomy as a tool for learning, teachers will be teaching students
skills including how to Define, Describe, Compare & Contrast, Classify, Generalise,
Sequence, Predict, Evaluate, and understand Cause & Effect.
To add some fun to the learning students will also spend some time exploring ‘Myth
Busters’ e.g. ‘an apple a day keeps the Doctor away’.
“Waiho i te toipoto, kaua i te toiroa” - Let us keep close together, not wide apart.
For the Children,
Shane Campbell

PTA POST
Maungaturoto Primary School Pet Day & Gala
Saturday 18th October 2014
Maungaturoto Primary School is holding the Pet Day and Gala on Saturday 18th October 2014. Planning
is already underway and we need the entire school community support to make this day a
success. Each month the PTA will be asking families of the school to bring an item for different raffles,
activities and stalls held at the Gala. For example in June each family is asked to bring in to the school
one tin of some kind of food. Each month the PTA will place in the school newsletter what is coming up
next month. The months are listed below with what is asked to be brought in to school for that month;
July – A bottle of food or drink (for raffle & bottle in a barrow stall) & a packet of lollies
August – A jar of food (home-made or store bought) and an item for the White elephant stall
September – A packet of food (e.g. a packet of coffee or a packet of cereal) & a packet of lollies
October – A bottle of food or drink (for raffle & bottle in a barrow stall) and an article of clothing
for the 2nd hand clothing stall
Please check best before dates and if you have any questions or ideas please give Nyree Alcock a call
on 09 4318 462

Team 2 News from 28th June game
Maungaturoto 2 had a great passing game against an evenly matched side. I was really proud of the
way the girls really thought about where they were passing to and this resulted in a good flow down the
court and not too many turnovers! Well done girls you are getting better and better each week and I love
the way you are incorporating what we are doing at trainings into the games on Saturday. Player of the
day was Sonya Steiner who made good choices about where she was passing.
Please remember girls need to be at the courts 30min before game time. Also, they must have trimmed
nails, hair tied back and wear no necklaces or bracelets. White socks and black knickers must be worn
for every game.
To receive cancellation notices please text code 13625 to 3080, otherwise please else let coaches
know so that they can contact you if games are cancelled.
