Tips for Rearing Your Animals
By now you should all have your calves, lambs or goats that you are bringing to pet day.
Feeding, training and giving them lots of attention.
o When you are leading your animal always stand on the left of your pet between the
shoulder and the head.
o Walk in a nice even pace, not too fast or too slow.
o Put some pegs or standards out in an 'M' shape and practise leading, this is the
course you will do on pet day. See the calf section in the schedule for the pattern
o Calves, Lambs and Goats will all walk the 'M' course.
o Brush your calf to get the loose hair out and make the coat shinny.
o Wash any poo's off your calf with warm water and a rag. Clean the wax out of her
ears also.
o Never wash your lamb, judges don't care if your lamb is dirty but they will not give
you any points if it has been washed. Just give it a light brush to get rid of the worst
of the dirt.
o Don't leave the halter on your calf all the time as it will rub all the hair off and leave
bald patches.
o If you are having trouble getting your pet to lead try feeding it away from where it
lives so that it get to know that it has to go for a walk for it's food. You might have to
get mum or dad to walk behind your pet and give it a push for the first few times.
