UNITED STATES GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL-LOS ANGELES (USGBC-LA) Job Description: Title: Director of Community Engagement Reports to: Executive Director Minimum Requirements: MA or advanced degree in a related field or BA with over 5 years experience in project management or related field. About USGBC-LA: USGBC-LA’s Mission is to promote sustainability in Los Angeles County’s built environment by delivering access to knowledge, resources, recognition and networking. USGBC-LA works collaboratively with member organizations and others to promote LEED, sustainability and related social and community programs in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. USGBC-LA seeks to influence education, employment, business development while transforming the built environment within one generation. Brief Position Description: The Director of Community Engagement will report to the Executive Director and will be primarily responsible for building positive public relationships, identifying new community partners and developing programs as well as goals and objectives for involvement. This individual will facilitate engagement with other non-profit organizations, businesses, universities and other stakeholders critical to the success of the Chapter. Duties include procuring new partnerships, developing and implementing Community Partner projects, communicating chapter strategies and objectives, project management and implementation, establishing policy guidelines, and effectively building public relationships. The proposed position would also be charged with introducing newly identified resources which are intended to maximize internal and external communications, as well as promote public involvement in the chapter while helping partners articulate their own sustainable goals to be supported by the Chapter. The Director of Community Engagement will act as a liaison between the ED and the Chapter Branches. Chapter Branches receive the Chapters strategic goals and objectives and are charged with implementing stated initiatives on a localized level. The Director of Community Engagement will help Chapter leaders implement their local action plans and will provide support, guidance and oversight as necessary. This position would also be responsible for interpreting and developing a plan to strategically address needs for LEED, Green build contacts, Green Schools and to address public concerns. The Director of Community Engagement will prepare materials, research and perform other duties in support of marketing efforts and act as a conduit to underrepresented communities such as the Spanish speaking, Latino/ Hispanic and African-American communities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The main job responsibilities and tasks required for this position are organized under the following Key Performance Indicators: This position is charged with creating, managing, implementing and evaluating programs in the following key domains. Green Community Engagement • The audiences reached through the chapter’s green schools, affordable green homes/social equity, green job creation, and green community building programs led by the chapter. Preference is given to programs that address underserved populations or low-income communities. Diversity and Inclusion • Develop and implement Chapter diversity initiatives and demonstrate a capacity to engage new audiences and partnerships outside of the chapter’s primary demographic constituency. Advocacy engagement • Provide support helping increase number of Advocacy Committee volunteers particularly those able to speak Spanish so as to create a broad based education and awareness campaign highlighting legislation that most impacts lives and communities of those we serve. Advocacy initiative will increase education and orientation to Emerging Professionals as well as increase the total number of hours logged. Partnerships: • Help increase number and current community partners program. By increasing number of key strategic relationships with USGBC member companies and most significant supporters, USGBC-LA will increase its influence and financial base, while creating meaningful and diverse programs to meet our communities’ sustainable and green building needs. Membership Recruitment and Retention • Increase present efforts to recruit new membership for individuals and organizations. USGBC-LA seeks to increase membership recruitment and retention efforts by making membership and chapter participation a relevant and valuable employment vehicle as well as a venue for volunteer, leadership and professional development. LEED Certified Buildings • USGBC-LA will maintain an ongoing record of registered and certified buildings available via USGBC.org. The numbers of registered and certified buildings will be reported on the deliverable tracking sheet. Additionally, support and guidance will be provided to building owners and managers seeking LEED registration and certification. Practicum and Internship students will be encouraged to become LEED-AP’s and provide resources and support to managers and building owners seeking LEED Certification. LEED Accredited Professionals • USGBC-LA intends to increase the number of LEED Accredited Professionals currently enrolled as volunteers and/or members in the chapter. USGBC-LA will create clear pathways of engagement for LEED Accredited Professionals, demonstrating the employment and career benefits of accreditation. USGBC-LA will connect new LEED Accredited Professionals to community projects and other professional opportunities. Emphasis will be placed on attracting a diverse group of candidates that reflect the needs and composition of LA’s rich make-up. This LEED Accredited Professionals initiative will also include expansion of our current LEED faculty able to provide needed course work as well as the development of a data base that will identify building and renovation projects in the community, registration and certification progress, contact information, resources required and other logistics. Emphasis will also be placed on developing chapter-specific documents and preparation materials for course work and study guides. Greenbuild Engagement: • USGBC-LA will also identify and implement a campaign to increase the number of chapter members, volunteers and Emerging Professionals to participate for the 2013-2015 conferences.
