“ OSHAWA CONTRUCTION CO-OP INTERNSHIP PROGRAM”
Responsibilities of the Co-operative Education Students at the Construction Site:
As a student of the Co-operative Education program, you are in the unique position of being a
student and an employee. Lots of dedicated effort will be expected of you at your placement
“construction site” and your Building Construction/Co-op Teacher.
When you are at the placement, you must think of yourself as a member of that company – a
team player. All company rules apply to you. You must make a firm commitment to the
company and to the Co-operative Education program. There is no wage payment for your time at
the placements.
This course will be the same length as your school semester. You are required to report to the
designated site by the time(s) agreed with your teacher and placement employer.
You MUST acquire 110 hours for each credit you are earning ( 4 Credit Program). Failure to
acquire these hours may result in credits not being granted. Completing 440 hours is NOT
course completion and all students are required to remain in the program until the end of the
semester.
HARD HATS and SAFETY BOOTS are to be worn during all work times. SAFETY GLASSES
are to be worn while using power equipment, when working overhead or the potential of an eye
injury.
FALL ARREST and PROTECTION:
You are NOT allowed to work in or on areas where a fall could result as outlined in the training
provided in class from the Construction Safety Association of Ontario “Fall Protection Training
Program”. This includes outside open edges of a building or elevated platform that does not meet
the standards set out from your training in Fall Protection and the Occupational Health and
Safety Act of Ontario. If you would like to have some experience in this area then you must
make arrangements with your Co-op teacher to be both present and wearing the school provided
fall protection equipment. This includes the outside edges of walls and or trusses/roofs of any
building.
WORK EXPECTIONS: Although this program is specifically construction related, you are also
learning general employability skills. Therefore I expect each of you to arrive with a “Good
Morning” and with a mindset of being helpful to your employer and/or the crew. You are
expected to engage yourself in the work that has been provided for you each day you are on site.
TOOLS and POWER EQUIPMENT: Most of you have little or no experience in the safe use of
tools and power equipment. You must ask for specific training both in the use and safety
precautions before being allowed to use any unfamiliar tools or equipment.
WORKPLACE ASSIGNMENTS: During the semester you will have a few workplace specific
assignments to complete. These assignments are an interactive type and will require some input
from your employer or a designate in order to gain knowledge about the construction industry or
workplace in general. You need take some time in asking for help to complete these at a
convenient time during your work experience. (Lunch or breaks may be the best opportunity)
P.P.L.P. Personal Placement Learning Plan: You have specific learning goals to work towards
throughout the semester that is job specific and sets a path to gain
“ Knowledge and Understanding” – Build on “communication” skills “
Application” Apply what you have learned and use your “Thinking and Inquiry” skills.
Breaks and Lunch
Bring your lunch !!!! ( and lots of water to drink ).
 A catering truck may arrive at the construction site. If you wish to purchase some food,
you will need to have your money with you ( No charge accounts are allowed by the
student). There are no other lunch facilities, and the construction site is not located to any
(walking) fast food sites.
 Your breaks and lunch will be designated by your placement employer.
 Bring lots of water; KEEP YOURSELF ALERT, HYDRATED, and SAFE.
ATTENDANCE
You will be expected to attend EVERY DAY . Absence may mean that you will miss learning
about a new technique, or an opportunity to participate in activities at the site. If you miss
training involving equipment, you will not be allowed to use that equipment.
If you plan to be absent, you must fill the “ Co-op student request for absent form” and give it to
your Co-op teacher prior to your day of planned absents. (Example; Doctors appointment) If you
have an unplanned absent or are going to be late getting to your placement you must contact
Central C.I. @ 905-723-4678 of an unplanned absent or late arriving before 8:30 AM. In
addition you are responsible for knowing how to contact your Co-op employer and informing
them of a planned or unplanned absent or late arrival. Failure to follow the above reporting of
absent(s) you could be asked to leave the program.
WEEKLY LOG REPORTS/JOURNALS
You are required to record your daily activities at the job placement and record the hours worked
for the day ( not including lunch time). The report must be completed in pen, signed by you and
your placement employer at the end of each week. Sign the LOG JOURNAL and complete the
comment section. (Sample copy attached)
These reports will prove that you have completed the number of hours needed to earn your
credits. Do not loose or misplace these weekly reports.
WEATHER and CLIMATE:
Be aware of the weather predictions for the day and dress for the weather.
