OSHAWA CONSTRUCTION CO-OP INTERNSHIP This program is offered through Oshawa Central Collegiate at various Durham Region East residential construction sites Cooperative Education is a program that provides hands on learning at a community placement and the students earn credits for the OSSD. Students are earning credits while learning about a career for their future. Grade 11 Home School Semester Complete compulsory credits for the OSSD at your home school Earn four credits for your OSSD On Site Semester Transfer to site school for the Construction Co-op Program Earn four credits while attending the residential building site *Completion of Community Involvement requirements * Completion of Literacy Test Summer Grade 12 Complete all compulsory credits for the OSSD at your home school Earn four credits for your OSSD Possible paid employment with the skilled trades professionals. Transfer to the site school for the Construction Co-op Program Earn four credits while attending the home building site Possible registration as an apprentice during this semester GRADUATION* from your home school. Possible paid employment with the skilled trades professionals Students attend a full day for a full semester in either first OR second semester The students are instructed by qualified, trade professionals at the home building site Students are assigned on a rotational basis to work with professional crews on site Students are expected to experience a variety of construction trades in a partnership with a skilled trades professional who is working at the home building site Students earn four credits for the OSSD Students complete the application package with the assistance of Guidance, Cooperative Education teachers and parents Parental involvement is encouraged Transportation is the responsibility of the student (accessible by public transit) Students are expected to provide some Personal Protection Equipment and hand tools (Approximate costs’ $200.00 - $250.00) Student Selection Criteria Positive Attitude Willing to learn about the work to be done Work destination is part of the education plan Willingness to complete an OSSD Able to handle a variety of weather conditions Currently enrolled in Grade 11 or Grade 12 at a secondary school in Durham Region Males and females are welcome to apply Interested in apprenticeship opportunities in the construction trades Application Process Students are often informed about the opportunities for Construction Co-op during Grade 10 Career Studies course. Students complete an application for the Cooperative Education program at the home school. Students complete an application for the Construction Co-op program. Applications are forwarded by the students home school to Central Collegiate. Students are interviewed prior to acceptance into the Construction Co-op program. Students are notified about their acceptance. Registration and the acceptance process for Central Collegiate is completed early spring. Students are provided with Workplace Safety and Insurance coverage through the Ministry of Education. Students are encouraged to enroll with the Student Accident Insurance Coverage. Students will receive a minimum of 35 hours of Pre-Placement instruction prior to attending the home building site. This includes work ethics, health and safety, rights and responsibilities of students, and workplace opportunities and challenges. Students will earn two credits for Construction Technology (TCJ3/4) and two linked credits for Cooperative Education or other applicable course designations. Students working on-site with sub-contractors will be monitored by a certified teacher. Construction trades include: carpentry, drywall, bricklayer, siding, home insulation, painting and other trades when available. How successful is the program? Students who have proven their ability and desire to work in construction trades are being hired part time during Christmas, March Break, and Summer. Their employability potential increases once they have completed grade 12. Durham District School Board Oshawa Central C.I. “ OSHAWA CONTRUCTION CO-OP INTERNSHIP PROGRAM” Responsibilities of the Co-operative Education Students at the Construction Site: As a student of the Co-operative Education program, you are in the unique position of being a student and an employee. Lots of dedicated effort will be expected of you at your placement “construction site” and your Building Construction/Co-op Teacher. When you are at the placement, you must think of yourself as a member of that company – a team player. All company rules apply to you. You must make a firm commitment to the company and to the Co-operative Education program. There is no wage payment for your time at the placements. This course will be the same length as your school semester. You are required to report to the designated site by the time(s) agreed with your teacher and placement employer. You MUST acquire 110 hours for each credit you are earning ( 4 Credit Program). Failure to acquire these hours may result in credits not being granted. Completing 440 hours is NOT course completion and all students are required to remain in the program until the end of the semester. HARD HATS and SAFETY BOOTS are to be worn during all work times. SAFETY GLASSES are to be worn while using power equipment, when working overhead or the potential of an eye injury. FALL ARREST and PROTECTION: You are NOT allowed to work in or on areas where a fall could result as outlined in the training provided in class from the Construction Safety Association of Ontario “Fall Protection Training Program”. This includes outside open edges of a building or elevated platform that does not meet the standards set out from your training in Fall Protection and the Occupational Health and Safety Act of Ontario. If you would like to have some experience in this area then you must make arrangements with your Co-op teacher to be both present and wearing the school provided fall protection equipment. This includes the outside edges of walls and or trusses/roofs of any building. WORK EXPECTIONS: Although this program is specifically construction related, you are also learning general employability skills. Therefore I expect each of you to arrive with a “Good Morning” and with a mindset of being helpful to your employer and/or the crew. You are expected to engage yourself in the work that has been provided for you each day you are on site. TOOLS and POWER EQUIPMENT: Most of you have little or no experience in the safe use of tools and power equipment. You must ask for specific training both in the use and safety precautions before being allowed to use any unfamiliar tools or equipment. WORKPLACE ASSIGNMENTS: During the semester you will have a few workplace specific assignments to complete. These assignments are an interactive type and will require some input from your employer or a designate in order to gain knowledge about the construction industry or workplace in general. You need take some time in asking for help to complete these at a convenient time during your work experience. (Lunch or breaks may be the best opportunity) P.P.L.P. Personal Placement Learning Plan: You have specific learning goals to work towards throughout the semester that is job specific and sets a path to gain “ Knowledge and Understanding” – Build on “communication” skills “ Application” Apply what you have learned and use your “Thinking and Inquiry” skills. Breaks and Lunch Bring your lunch !!!! ( and lots of water to drink ). A catering truck may arrive at the construction site. If you wish to purchase some food, you will need to have your money with you ( No charge accounts are allowed by the student). There are no other lunch facilities, and the construction site is not located to any (walking) fast food sites. Your breaks and lunch will be designated by your placement employer. Bring lots of water; KEEP YOURSELF ALERT, HYDRATED, and SAFE. ATTENDANCE You will be expected to attend EVERY DAY . Absence may mean that you will miss learning about a new technique, or an opportunity to participate in activities at the site. If you miss training involving equipment, you will not be allowed to use that equipment. If you plan to be absent, you must fill the “ Co-op student request for absent form” and give it to your Co-op teacher prior to your day of planned absents. (Example; Doctors appointment) If you have an unplanned absent or are going to be late getting to your placement you must contact Central C.I. @ 905-723-4678 of an unplanned absent or late arriving before 8:30 AM. In addition you are responsible for knowing how to contact your Co-op employer and informing them of a planned or unplanned absent or late arrival. Failure to follow the above reporting of absent(s) you could be asked to leave the program. WEEKLY LOG REPORTS/JOURNALS You are required to record your daily activities at the job placement and record the hours worked for the day ( not including lunch time). The report must be completed in pen, signed by you and your placement employer at the end of each week. Sign the LOG JOURNAL and complete the comment section. (Sample copy attached) These reports will prove that you have completed the number of hours needed to earn your credits. Do not loose or misplace these weekly reports. WEATHER and CLIMATE: Be aware of the weather predictions for the day and dress for the weather. .
