Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Guidelines for the Hummon Research Group
435 Stepan Chemistry
Sample Preparation Area (SPA)
 A lab coat, gloves, and protective eyewear are mandatory at all times.
 Gloves worn in SPA must be removed before working in any other area of the lab.
Tissue Culture Room (TCR)
 A TCR-specific lab coat and gloves are mandatory at all times.
 Gloves worn in TCR must be removed before working in any other area of the lab.
 Wear protective eyewear as necessary.
Main Lab
 A lab coat, cryo-protective gloves, and protective eyewear are mandatory when working with
liquid nitrogen.
 Never open cryotank without a second laboratory member assisting.
 A lab coat, gloves and protective eyewear should be worn as necessary.
Data Analysis Room (DAR)
 No chemicals are permitted in the DAR at any time.
 No PPE required—gloves and lab coats should be removed before entering the DAR.
Additional hazards in the Hummon lab include:
 Working with mammalian lysis buffers
 Working with liquid nitrogen
 Working with hazardous chemicals
*Please note that when using microscopes, protective eyewear is not necessary
Always be knowledgeable of all chemicals to be used in a given procedure. This includes
reviewing the MSDS, proper PPE, additional laboratory equipment, proper volume amounts, proper
ventilation, and proper handling of each chemical.
Each lab member should claim a lab coat and a pair of safety glasses as his or her own for
permanent use. If the available PPE does not fit you properly, additional lab coats or eyewear can
be ordered. Extra lab coats will be stored in 435 and extra eyewear will be available in the safety
cabinet.
All potentially hazardous procedures must be performed during peak lab hours (When other lab
members are present). Undergraduate researchers must have a graduate student, post-doctoral
fellow, or lab technician present.
Please refer any questions about PPE or proper procedures for its use to either Susan (our current
safety officer) or Dr. Hummon.
