COMMUNICATIONS & FUNDRAISING MANAGER (MATERNITY COVER)
JOB DESCRIPTION
Reporting to: The Chief Executive
Location:
Victoria, London
Hours:
Full-Time (37½ hours per week)
Salary:
£33,000 - £38,000 (depending on experience)
Purpose:
To effectively manage, coordinate and monitor Arthritis Action’s communications and
fundraising activities to raise the Charity’s profile, enhance current income streams and
develop new sources of voluntary income. Communications and fundraising activities will
need to add value while reflecting the charitable ethos of the organisation.
This is a 12-month contract with the possibility of extension or being assigned to a similar
role within the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
Communications

To raise the Charity’s profile using all communications channels with key influencers, organisations and
target audiences.

To implement the Charity’s communications plans and activities, including but not limited to media
relations, member and stakeholder communications, marketing, advertising, and digital and social media.

To be the Charity’s brand guardian and manage/protect the Charity’s reputation.

To lead on all copywriting and production of content (both online and offline), marketing materials and key
publications including the bi-annual magazine, press releases, articles and statements.

To plan, monitor, evaluate and report on media coverage, web traffic and brand mentions (both online and
offline).

To lead and co-ordinate the development of the website ensuring that it supports the delivery of the
organisation’s strategic objectives.

To maintain excellent relations with members and oversee the management of a case study database.

To ensure that staff are well briefed on key communications issues.

To monitor the annual communications budget.

To keep up to date on best practice within the charity sector generally – and to pay particular attention to
changes in communications innovation, legislation and codes of practice.
Fundraising

To advise, lead and implement the Charity’s new fundraising strategy.

Identify and implement the actions necessary to sustain and enhance the Charity’s legacy income.

Keep abreast of fundraising opportunities across a broad sweep of potential sources of income, including
grants, donations, membership and events.

To ensure that the Charity meets its legal obligations with regards to fundraising, adheres to the Code of
Fundraising Practice and maintains its reputation through its fundraising activities.

To organise fundraising events and leverage legacy fundraising through the Charity’s members.

Develop and keep up to date the parts of the website relevant to fundraising and use other digital
opportunities for fundraising.

To ensure that effective systems and processes are in place to manage/track fundraising performance
and actively monitor income performance

Represent the Charity at external events to promote fundraising, travelling as appropriate within London
and the rest of the UK.
Person Specification - Essential












Degree level qualification or equivalent – preferably in a Communications or related field.
At least 6 years working in the field of Communications and Fundraising, and able to demonstrate
knowledge of a broad range of Communications and Fundraising activities – media, websites, publications,
marketing, social media, PR, fundraising events, etc.
Experience of establishing and running fundraising projects for a variety of sources of income and with
successful outcomes.
Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to write in Plain English for a range of
audiences.
Experience of developing and implementing communications and fundraising strategies in line with an
organisation’s vision, values and strategic objectives.
Experience of monitoring and evaluating communications and fundraising activity.
Wide experience of working with websites and producing website and digital content.
Strong organisational skills with excellent attention to detail.
Computer literate with good MS Office skills, internet and web technologies.
Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to influence across the organisation and externally.







Knowledge of website content management systems and mass e-marketing tools.
Database experience.
Experience of working for a charity or not-for-profit organisation.
Experience of managing budgets.
Proven and demonstrable experience of editing and producing publications.
Experience of working with e-communications, including preparing and sending E-Bulletins, supporter
updates, appeals, etc.
