7th Grade Integrated Science Mr. Archibald Contact Information marchibald@dsdmail.net Phone: (801) 402-7200 Room #113 What is Science? Science is a way of knowing, a process for gaining knowledge and understanding of the natural world. Goals for our Class Succeed at gaining knowledge about the natural world Realize the importance of science in our everyday life’s Every student should feel comfortable enough to ask questions and participate in class Learn to work together and respect one another Have fun learning about science Classroom Procedures 1) Always respect everyone. 2) Be ready to work and learn from the moment you enter the classroom. 3) Make good use of our time. 4) Please don’t bring food, drinks, or gum. 5) No electronic devices including cell phones, head phones, music, and any other electronic games or devices. 6) Do not do anything that would take away from the learning environment of the classroom. Safety Due to the nature of science, we may be taking part in a number of hands on or lab activities in class. These activities will usually be done in groups. During these activities, it is expected that each student be extra careful and follow instructions attentively. Absolutely no horseplay or unsafe behavior will be tolerated during class, but especially watch what you are doing during labs and group work. Science Binders In this class every student will be expected to keep all work in a three ring binder that is sectioned into different science units. A significant part of your grade will be determined by how well you organize and maintain your science notebook. All completed work for this class will be kept in your science binder. You will keep all of your assignments throughout the entire year, thus you will not throw away “old assignments, tests, or quizzes.” Every week you will receive points for keeping this binder up to date. Quickstart In this class each day we will complete a daily Quickstart assignment at the very beginning of class. This assignment will be turned in every Friday. If you are absent you are required to make up the Quickstart that you missed. Assignments All assignments should be labeled with your full name, the assignment name, the date, and your class period. Any assignment turned in without your name will automatically lose 2 points. These points cannot be earned back. All assignments must be kept in your science notebook. Late work will be accepted, but will lose 20% of its value for each school day that it is late. Late work will only be accepted for five school days after the assignment was due, this includes assignments turned in with a hall pass. Re-doing Assignments Any assignments turned in on time that have been completed and corrected may be re-done for full credit if turned in within one week of receiving the assignment back. Only the problems or questions missed need to be re-done. You may not fix an incomplete or late assignment for points. Please wait until the assignment is passed back before you fix problems missed. Quizzes and Tests A quiz may be given on any topic, I will always make sure to let you know at least one or two days in advance, the date of the quiz. The purpose of the quizzes will be to help you know what you need more practice with, so quizzes can be re-done for full credit within one week of the original day the quiz was given. A test will be given at the end of each unit. Students, who have an excused absence, may make up a test they have missed before school. Cheating will not be tolerated on any assignment, quiz, or test and will result in a zero on the assessment. Students who cheat will have their parents/guardian contacted and may be referred to the administrative office. Absences and Tardies Students will be marked tardy if they are not sitting in their assigned seat when the bell rings. Every time you are tardy it will effect your class citizenship. Students who are absent are responsible for finding out what they missed and must make it up on their own time. If you are absent, you will have as many days as you were absent to make up the work you missed. Each day in class is very important, so students should make every effort to be present. All assignments that we have done will be kept in a file at the back of the classroom. Hall Passes Each student will receive 3 hall passes per term, once they have been used up, they are gone and you will not be allowed to leave class, except for extreme emergencies. Grades Major assignments, projects, quizzes, study guides and tests will be given a score based on the number of correct answers. Tests and quizzes will be 25% of your total grade where as general assignments will be 75% of your final grade. At the end of the term, students will earn a grade based upon the following percentage grade scale: 100-93 A 92-90 A- 89-87 B+ 86-83 B 82-80 B- 79-77 C+ 76-73 C 72-70 C- 69-67 D+ 66-63 D 62-60 D- Below 60 F Citizenship Citizenship grades will be based on normal concentrated classroom behavior. Less than ideal behavior, disrupting the learning environment of the classroom, numerous absences and/or tardies will result in a deduction of your citizenship grade.
