Guide to the Lutheran High School Math Diagnostic Tests Three tests are offered: Pre-Algebra Diagnostic Test: This test is given to students who wish to “challenge” their initial placement into Pre-Algebra; in other words, the student would like to be in Algebra 1 instead of Pre-Algebra. If a student is satisfied with the placement of Pre-Algebra, there is no need to take this test. Algebra Diagnostic Test: This test is written for those students who have had a full year of Algebra in the 8th grade. Passing this test is mandatory for all freshmen that have initially been placed into Geometry*. If a student passes this test, they will be placed into Honors Geometry. Students who are initially placed into Honors Geometry are not required to take this test. Geometry Diagnostic Test: This test is given to those students who have had a full year of Algebra in 7th grade and a full year of Geometry in the 8th grade. Passing this test is mandatory for all freshmen to be eligible for Honors Algebra 2/Trigonometry (regardless of their initial placement). Note: The University of California recently announced the following update to the mathematics (“c”) subject requirement for undergraduate admissions to both the University of California campus and California State University campuses: If your students has never taken Geometry, he or she will need to enroll in a yearlong Geometry course in order to satisfy the admission requirements for both the UC and CSU systems. Please go to http://tinyurl.com/OLu-Challenge-Test Info to register for a math challenge/diagnostic test. Pre-tests for practice can be found on the admissions page of our website at www.lhsoc.org/admissions. A confirmation email/room assignment will be sent prior to the testing date.
