All sessions are in the BRC room 286 unless otherwise noted.
You may park in BRC parking garage on the day of the session at no charge.
Breakfast refreshments will be available starting at 8:30am.
Lunch will be provided for all sessions except on September 27 and October 11.

Understanding your role in the V2C and the global impact of Rice citizenship.

At the completion of this TEAMS module, Managing and Leading at Rice, participants should
understand their role and responsibilities for being actively engaged in identifying, preventing
and/or resolving problematic situations, and in making suggestions for improvement in their
individual work groups, and more broadly at Rice.

Leadership and Teams
Presenter: Dr. Brent Smith; Associate Professor; Associate Dean for JGS Executive Education

Lessons from Leaders presenter: Dr. Mary McIntire, Dean Glasscock School of
Continuing Studies
At the completion of this TEAMS module, Leadership and Teams, participants should
understand the different personality styles involved in any team; the team process; the array of
leadership qualities and characteristics that exist, and how they and other individuals view them;
and how they can contribute to their teams in a positive way.
Participants will also receive their 360 and MBTI assessment results at this session.
November – January: Each participant will receive a 1.5 hour executive coaching session to
review the MBTI and 360 assessments to identify and create development goals. Sessions will
be scheduled at a later date.

Hire Right - Job descriptions/Four C's of a Diamond Employee, Employee/Interviewing
Skills


Lessons from Leaders presenter: Barbara Bryson, Associate Vice President for
Facilities, Engineering & Planning
At the completion of this TEAMS module, Hire Right, participants should have a broad,
basic understanding of how and why to write job descriptions, plan and conduct a behavioral
interview, and be a "diamond" supervisor and develop "diamond" employees in order to
better manage and execute their responsibilities, and strengthen Rice's foundation of
functionally strong and competent first line and mid-level managers.
January 17, 2014: 9am - 4pm

Adopting a Structured Approach to Problem Solving – Includes the entire problemsolving process; defining the process, diagnosing it, identifying solutions, and executing.


Lessons from Leaders presenter: Mark Ditman; Associate Vice President, Housing and
Dining
At the completion of this TEAMS module, Creating a Positive Work Environment and
Adopting a Structured Approach to Problem Solving, participants should be able to: (1)
explain the importance of hiring the right people and expecting them to do their jobs; (2)
describe the key elements involved in building a team; (3) explain the importance of building a
positive work environment, and the consequences of not doing so in order to better manage and
execute their responsibilities, and strengthen Rice's foundation of functionally strong and
competent first line and mid-level managers, as well as (4) learn how to define and diagnose a
problem, identify solutions and execute to be able to problem solve in a more strategic manner.
February 21, 2014: 9am - 4pm

Motivating, Communicating, and Providing Performance Feedback coaching/counseling/performance appraisal tools/providing feedback
Presenters: Dr. Linda Hamaker; Assistant Chair, Chemistry & Marie Wehrung; Director,
Learning and Professional Development

Lessons from Leaders presenter: Dr. John Hutchinson; Dean of Undergraduates,
Professor of Chemistry
At the completion of this TEAMS module, Motivating, Communicating, and Providing
Performance Feedback, participants should be able to describe: ways to communicate with and
motivate employees, in good times and bad; why providing performance feedback is critical to
your success as a leader; how to set effective goals; and how to deliver positive and negative
feedback effectively in order to better manage and execute their responsibilities, and strengthen
Rice's foundation of functionally strong and competent first line and mid-level managers.
March 21, 2014: 9am - 4pm

Process Improvement and Project Management


Lessons from Leaders presenter: Paula Sanders, Vice Provost, Academic Affairs,
Dean Of Graduate And Postdoctoral Studies, Professor, History
At the completion of this TEAMS module, Process Improvement and Project Management,
participants should be able to describe: practical ways to look at processes, break them down and
figure out how to improve them; the "big picture" issues regarding project management; and how
to solve some common project management pitfalls in order to better manage and execute their
responsibilities, and strengthen Rice's foundation of functionally strong and competent first line
and mid-level managers.
April 25, 2014: 9am - 4pm

The ABC's and 123's of Employment Law
Presenters: Carlos Garcia; Sr. Associate General Counsel & Dana Hess; Director, Employee
Relations

Lessons from Leaders presenter: David Bailiff; Head Football Coach
At the completion of this TEAMS module, ABC's and 123's of Employment Law, participants
should be able to describe legal and other obligations that leaders/supervisors should know
about; recognize red flags that alert them to an issue; and identify when and how to call in
support from available resources in order to better manage and execute their responsibilities, and
strengthen Rice's foundation of functionally strong and competent first line and mid-level
managers.
