2. Duties and Responsibilities:

Auto body painters must communicate with clients, employers and other employees to
plan and execute repair and painting jobs on a variety of vehicles, including cars, trucks
and buses. Depending on their employers, auto body painters may be required to have
knowledge of specialty painting techniques. Some auto body painters may need collision
repair capabilities as well.



In preparation for a painting vehicles, auto body painters must know how to remove
rust and other debris from surfaces to be painted, fill cavities and dents in vehicles to
create an even surface, mask or tape off details and components to avoid
contamination and select the proper colors and substances for the vehicles.
The painting process itself involves using paint sprayers and brushes to apply paint to a
vehicle, therefore, the painter should know how to handle different machines and
equipment.
Auto painter must know how to determine the necessary application of paint for a
thorough coat and checking for runs or sags in the paint to ensure a quality product.

Cleans equipment, paint mixing area, and work area.

Identification, safe handling, and appropriate disposal of paints, stains, preparatory and
undercoating materials, and other hazardous materials.
3. Competencies:

Knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, and application techniques common to
the auto painting trade.

Knowledge and skill in hazardous materials handling, application, and disposal.

Skill in the preparation and application of paints, stains, and surface preparation
materials to vide range of vehicle brands.

Plans and develops work schedules, equipment usage schedules, and procedures for
equipment maintenance.

Maintains time and material records, and submits reports.

Knowledge of all applicable codes, standards, and regulations.

Skill in estimating time and material requirements for different vehicle brands.
