(morning) Jane Gibson In this workshop we will explore the ever scaring prospect of cutting a knitted garment! There are a variety of steeking techniques and in this workshop you will learn when to apply each through a series of hands-on and demonstration activities. Knitting Fair Isle patterns in the round can use steeks to create armholes or a cardigan openings. This can be done using a sewing machine to stabilize the fabric before cutting. Or a few stitches can be added while knitting the garment to prepare a place to steek later. This can be the place to change colors for color work which will eliminate weaving in ends. And Edges can be stabilized by crocheting a chain stitch up a knit column. Reasons to steek: Create arm holes in a knit tube Create a cardigan from a tube Maintain a pattern with self striping yarn / or fair isle Knit two sleeves at once keeping pattern symmetrical Remove or add a piece if garment too big/ or too small (use a contrasting color) A small swatch will be required homework. Good Vibrations SHAWL (afternoon) Erin Kosich This was the Knit-along project for the Greater Buffalo Knitting Guild this summer. I chose it as a class option for two reasons: one, the project contained a technique or two that I had never seen before and actually had me STUMPED until I got the hang of it, so I thought that would be a good thing to present to a class, and two…many of us are going to be playing with Holiday Yarn’s great hand-dyed sock yarns this weekend, and this is a GREAT project for combining one of her tonal solids with one of her multicolors (or one of the yarns you may even dye YOURSELF this weekend)! Fun with pattern AND color…hooray! Supplies: 2 100 gram skeins of sock-weight yarn in contrasting colors (I used a solid and a multicolor), a long circular needle—size 4 Stitch Exploration Fingerless Mitts (afternoon) Jane Gibson In this workshop we will explore three different clever 2-color patterns that use only ONE color at a time. Your practice stitch swatch can be completed in to a fingerless mitt. Supplies: Smooth, #4 (worsted-weight) yarn in two contrasting colors US size 6, 7 or 8 dpns for knitting in the round Dyeing with Jennifer from Holiday Yarns (afternoon or morning option) Bring yourself and your enthusiasm! You will paint 2 skeins of FlockSock sock yarn (75% superwash merino/25% nylon, 4 ply) any way you see fit. We'll discuss pattern, variegates, options, and choose colors. When you’re finished, you'll have two skeins of yarn steamed, rinsed and ready to be taken home and hung to dry, dyed by you! Wear comfy clothes that you won't be too upset about if something colorful 'happens' to them. Additional Materials Fee.
