…Actually, I don’t know very much about Graham, have not been able to get back beyond William
Graham who died in Cumberland County in 1805. Of course Perry County was formed from
Cumberland in 1820 and he lived in the part which became Perry. I will enclose a copy of his will in
case it ever becomes of interest to you. He died 30 Nov. 1805. I do not have his birth date, but am
sure he was quite an old man when he died as his dau. Sarah, from whom I descend was married
right after the Revolution., She was born 24 Dec 1761. I do not have the name of William’s wife,
she must have predeceased him as not mentioned in the will.
William Graham had a son William who, I would judge from the will, had displeased his father as
he is cut off with one dollar. However, this would be an older man than your Wm. William (of the
will) had a son James, who may have had a son named William (every family had a William in
those days). I notice your William had a son James, in fact, two of them. He also had a son
Marshall—my Sarah Graham married David Marshall from another Perry county family.
Seven children was not a large family for those days, but surely if any sons had died leaving
children, those orphaned children would have been mentioned in the will. There may have been
other children who died young.
Notice that two of William’s daughters married Marshalls, so the two families were apparently
close. Elizabeth Graham was the wife of John Marshall, brother to my David Marshall.
MargaretGraham was married to James Black, brother to Rebecca Lowry Black who married
Samuel Shaw. Those Perry County families were all close friends and many intermarriages. I have
made a pedigree chart of that part of my family, so you can keep them straight, I hope.
If I were you, I would try to find out something about James Graham. Of course, I don’t know
whether he stayed in Pa. or went to Ky., as so many of these Perry County people did. On my
chart, numbers 4, 5, 12, 13, 14, and15 all went to Kentucky. Anyway, it looks to me as if James
Graham could be the father (or gr. Father) of your William. Of course, we can’t discount son
William either, even though his father did. I have copies of the inventory and an item from the
orphan’s court saying estate was settled as of 1830. Mrs. Ida E. Throne, Deputy, says the account
is missing from the files of 1805 and 1806. It just occurred to me that the account was not made
until 1830, so maybe she is looking in the wrong file.
Handwritten note: This is a mixed up letter, hope you can understand it. I usually “compose” a
letter first, but just sat down and typed this off. Now, I find picture of Wms tombstone, says he
died Nov 30, 1805, aged 86 years. So he was born ca 1719. Center Presbyterian Cemetery, 2 mi

New Info: Sent for “William, Pa., Indian Service under Wayne, R4181.” I wonder if this could
be William, Sr. His son-in-law David Marshall when young and unmarried fought with Anthony
Wayne just before the Rev.
I wonder if the Hugh Milligan who signed William’s inventory is his son-in-law, husband of
Jane Graham. Sixteen thousand dollars was a fortune in those days.

I am researching both surnames MARSHALL and GRAHAM, and I received your name and
address through the Perry Historians. Specifically, I am trying to determine the ancestors and
descendants of a Marshall Graham (b. 24 Aug 1832) near Thompsontown, PA, the Mifflin and
now Juniata County, a son of JAMES AND SOPHIA _____?_____ GRAHAM, the latter possibly
resided in Virginia. I believe JAMES GRAHAM (birth and death dates unknown), oldest son of
WILLIAM GRAHAM (B. about 1719), may have been the grandfather of MARSHALL GRAHAM,
and that MARSHALL GRAHAM got his first name from the GRAHAM connection to the
