Revelstoke Caribou Rearing in the Wild JOB PROFILE TITLE: ASSISTANT MOUNTAIN CARIBOU SHEPHERD JOB OVERVIEW Provide essential care, monitor, and guard captive mountain caribou and their calves during the maternity penning period. To ensure the health, well being and security of the penned mountain caribou and their calves at all times. This project requires the presence of shepherds 24 hours during the herding, penning and release of female caribou and their calves. First Nation shepherds will require capacity building and training in caribou husbandry, shepherding, surveillance, field monitoring and data collection, field data compilation, and predator aversion and hazing. Technicians may also be involved in education and outreach activities, such as lichen collection, live feed of video to internet sites, sharing of data or video on websites and working with regional school boards and the local community. Annual employment would be for approximately 4-5 months, March –July, 10 hours/day with housing and cost of food provided when on site. Penning would start in March 2014. ACCOUNTABILITIES Required: Ensures the day to day welfare of penned female mountain caribou and their calves, with particular attention to animal health and safety. Provides basic animal husbandry functions such as ensuring life necessities through the provision of food and water on a regular basis. Assists in the maintenance and repair of the maternity pen and associated facilities. Documents observations, daily activities and/or other actions related to animal health and safety in a clear and concise manner following established protocols and procedures. Conducts regular patrols of the maternity pen facility to ensure structure integrity and animal safety Conducts patrols of peripheral area to assess the presence of predators using established equipment such as remote cameras and track traps. Conducts enumeration of captive animals as per established policies and procedures Repairs the maternity pen and related facilities as may be required Inventories supplies and informs senior staff of deficiencies. JOB REQUIREMENTS Proficient in the use of firearms and/or other forms of deterrents such as hazing, pepper spray, etc Valid firearm Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) or is qualified to receive a PAL Ability to identify animals by tracks, scat, or other indicators Interest in animal husbandry Willingness to share experiences and participate in education and outreach activites as required. Willingness and ability to work outdoors in inclement weather at a remote location on a rotational shift basis (7 day cycle; 3 staff @ 10 hrs each/shift) Valid B.C. driver’s licence Meet safety standards of Work Safe BC Operation of a variety of equipment, including boats, snowmobiles, and ORVs Valid Canadian Pleasure Craft Operator Card (Boating License) is an asset Ability to carry equipment and supplies in difficult terrain Good physical condition Basic operation of a personal computer (i.e. Word, Excel, etc) Attention to detail, with the ability to conduct daily data entry logs Mechanically inclined and able to conduct basic equipment maintenance and repairs.
