The Puerto Rico Medical Students Association (AEMPR) invites Medical, Undergraduate,
Graduate and Post-Graduate students to present their research work through posters
presentations in our Fifth Annual Research Symposium of the Puerto Rico Medical Students
Association, to be held on April 11th, 2015 at the Condado Plaza Hotel - San Juan, Puerto Rico. This
opportunity is not limited to students that have concluded their research, being accessible to
those that wish to present research currently in progress, case reports, or as a method of practice
for a more specialized symposium. The purpose is to stimulate and expand the students’ scientific
knowledge and professional development through the sharing of research results and
experiences, as well as promoting networking opportunities.
Categories





Basic Sciences- These projects include pharmacology, microbiology, physiology, anatomy,
genetics, cell biology, and neuroscience, among others.
Patient-oriented Research and Epidemiology- These projects include, public health,
clinical patient-oriented and population-based research.
Clinical and Translational Research- These projects focus on clinical trials and basic
research with a close relationship to future clinical use, and the translation of these results
for clinical application.
Biotechnology, Bioengineering and Informatics- These projects deal with the
development or implementation of machinery, medical devices or computer programs for
use in human subjects and/or, clinical or basic science research.
Clinical Case Report- These projects deal with presenting specific clinical cases and/or
their management.
Eligibility


Be a full-time student enrolled in any of the following institutions:
o Universidad del Este
o Metropolitan University
o University of Turabo
o Carlos Albizu University
o Central University of the Caribbean
o Interamerican University of Puerto Rico
o Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico
o Ponce Health Sciences University
o Pontificial Catholic University of Puerto Rico
o San Juan Bautista School of Medicine
o University of Puerto Rico
o Any other accredited university
Be a medical resident in any accredited hospital in Puerto Rico and United States.

Guidelines for Abstract Submission
The following guidelines apply to all participants, regardless of their academic level.
All abstracts need to have the following requirements in order to be evaluated:




More than 1 abstract may be submitted for evaluation.3
All submissions must be received via the abstract submission form via email to
aempr.simposio@gmail.com by March 7, 2014, before 11:59pm. Late submissions and
paper submissions will not be accepted.
Citations, tables, graphics, or keywords are not allowed in the abstract form and will be
removed.
If for any circumstances the presenter needs to withdraw his/her abstract submission
from our Research Symposium, he/she has to contact the AEMPR immediately via email
to aempr.simposio@gmail.com. This must be done before March 28, 2014. However, if
registration has been completed, a refund will not be provided.
Poster Presentation Abstract

Accepted abstracts must contain*
 Authors
 At least one author in the author block
 Please write in the presenter block the name of the author that will be
presenting during the day of the activity.
 Reminder: only one person can present per abstract.
 Objectives
 At least two objectives of the investigation.
 Emphasize the purpose of performing this study.
 Introduction
 Emphasize basic definitions, background information, epidemiology,
etiology, and relevance of the topic of interest.
 Methods
 Describe the methodology utilized to perform the study. This may include
the design of the study, the target population, and the sequential process
utilized to obtain the study results.
 Results
 Explain the technique utilized to calculate these results.
 Describe and explain the results obtained in the study.

 Remember that tables or graphics are NOT allowed in this
format.
Conclusions
 Discuss the study results and how these results explain the objectives
described before. Also, explain if there were any limitations that may
have altered the results obtained. Finally, suggest recommendations
based on the information obtained from this research and possibilities for
future study.
References
 Only references used to prepare the abstract are required.
*Abstracts missing any of the above information will be rejected.*
Case Report



Important: In order to submit an abstract for case report, it is NOT required that the
author has a mentor. This implies that a student can independently, without the
monitoring of a physician or mentor, present a case report.
 This category is a great option for those students that are not currently involved
in any formal investigation and have the interest of participating in our
Research Symposium.
This category will follow the same requirements and deadline dates described above,
with the exception that the Abstract Submission Form is different.
Accepted abstracts of case report must contain the following:
 Title
 Name of the project.
 Introduction
 Brief description of the etiology, prognosis, and epidemiology of the
particular condition discussed in the case, and the importance of
studying it.
 Case Report
 This part must include:
1. Chief complaint
2. History of Present Illness
3. Relevant Present and Past Medical History
4. Relevant Family History
5. Review of Systems
6. Physical Examination
7. Laboratories and imaging studies
8. Treatment and Management

Discussion
 Discuss the conclusions that can be drawn after studying this case
report. Describe the particularity of this case and its importance.
Suggest recommendations for future similar cases.
 A maximum of 200 words is accepted.
References
 Only references used to prepare the abstract are required.
Selection Process
Abstract Evaluation




A committee composed of physicians and members of the AEMPR will be evaluating the
abstracts. This committee includes members of all four Medical Schools that compose the
AEMPR.
The evaluation of each abstract will be blinded to minimize bias, meaning that judges will
NOT have the author’s personal information.
Abstracts will be judged for acceptance to the poster session based on the following
criteria:
o Innovation & impact on the target population
o Clear objective(s) with appropriate evaluation of the research/project
o Clarity & organization of the writing
Judging criteria for the final evaluation in the Research Symposium will be sent via the
Notification e-mail by March 21, 2014.
Notification E-mails




Once an abstract has been submitted the only means of communication will be through email. Therefore, make sure that a valid and current e-mail address is recorded on the email block in the Abstract Submission Form. Please add aempr.simposio@gmail.com to
your contacts to make sure you receive our messages.
Notification letters will be e-mailed on March 7, 2014. This e-mail will be sent only to the
presenter who recorded one e-mail address in the Abstract Submission Form.
The Notification e-mail includes a letter that will explain all the details regarding
measurements of posters, program of the activity, evaluation process for awards, and
awards, among others.
