Summer Reading Sale Creek 9th Grade 2014-2015 Choose ONE book from one of the following authors. You may choose from fiction or non-fiction. Fiction options: Maya Angelou Angelou is an African-American author who writes about her experiences growing up from a child who refused to speak to a world traveler and artist. Ray Bradbury Bradbury is a well-known author of science- fiction stories and novels. “Bradbury excels in revealing the dark side that exists in us all, teaching us ultimately to celebrate the shadows rather than fear them (amazon.com).” Libba Bray Most of Bray’s works are “an interesting combination of fantasy, light horror, and historical fiction, with a dash of romance thrown in for good measure (amazon.com.)” Ted Dekker Ted Dekker is a New York Times best-selling author best known for mystery, thriller, and fantasy novels including Thr3e, Obsessed, and the Books of History Chronicles. Matt de la Pena De la Pena’s works combine sports themes along with issues of growing up and finding your place in the world. Gayle Forman Forman’s young adult novels focus on strong, believable female protagonists dealing with love and tragedy. Neil Gaiman Gaiman is best known for the Sandman series of graphic novels, but he has also written contemporary fiction. There is always an element of magic in Gaiman’s works (along with a twist of humor). John Green Green writes contemporary fiction about young adults, mixing the ordinary with the extraordinary. Khaled Hosseini Hosseini writes about life in Afghanistan, focusing on the lives of young people in the midst of war. George Orwell Eric Arthur Blair, known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic. Meg Rosoff Every Rosoff book is a bit different: mystery, comedy, drama, but all deal with relationships and life’s big questions. Markus Zusack Markus Frank Zusak is an Australian writer. He is best known for The Book Thief and The Messenger, two novels for young adults which have been international bestsellers. Non-fiction options: Corrie ten Boom Cornelia "Corrie" ten Boom, author of The Hiding Place, was a Dutch Christian who, along with her father and other family members, helped many Jews escape the Nazi Holocaust during World War II and was imprisoned for it. Annie Dillard Dillard writes about the power of nature in first-hand accounts in essays and memoir. Anne Frank Anne Frank was a teen writer who went into hiding during the Holocaust, journaling her experiences in the renowned work The Diary of Anne Frank. Doris Kearns Goodwin Goodwin is primarily a historical writer focusing on Presidents, including Franklin Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, and most recently Theodore Roosevelt. Clara Kramer Clara Kramer (née Schwarz) and her family were among the approximately 5,000 Jews in Zolkiew, Poland, before World War II. At the end of the war, she and her parents numbered among the approximately 60 who had survived. Pat McManus Prepare to laugh your head off as McManus weaves true stories about hunting, fishing, and camping. Jim Murphy Murphy deals with various topics in history and science, placing the reader in the middle of the action. Summer Reading will be assessed during the first two weeks of school.
