Appendix B. Distribution patterns of Lamiaceae species in Chios Island and Çeşme–
Karaburun Peninsula.
A 1km x 1km grid was applied in Chios and Çeşme–Karaburun, and the two regions were
divided in 915 and 1216 cells, respectively. All records of each species falling within the
same cell were replaced with one dot in the centre of the cell.
The 48 Lamiaceae species examined occupy 377 grid cells in Chios and 353 in ÇeşmeKaraburun (Fig. B1). According to the number and geographical position of grid cells it
occupies jointly in the two regions, each species was assigned to one of the following
distribution patterns (Table B1) based on the empirical assessment described below:
-
-
Widespread. Species occupying 91 to 353 grid cells in Chios and Çeşme–Karaburun
without northern or southern restriction (11 species).
Locally widespread. Species occupying 17 to 131 grid cells either in the northern or
southern part of at least one of the two regions, Chios and/or Çeşme–Karaburun,
whereas in the rest of the two regions their occurrence is sporadic (7 species).
Locally restricted. Species occupying 7 to 31 grid cells exclusively in the N–NC or
S–SC part of Chios and Çeşme–Karaburun (5 species).
Sporadic. Species occupying 5 to 31 grid cells in Chios and Çeşme–Karaburun with
no northern or southern restriction (7 species).
Rare. Species occupying 1 to 4 grid cell in Chios and Çeşme–Karaburun in total.
Neighbouring occupied cells were considered as one (18 species).
Distribution patterns as described above and as treated in the manuscript were jointly
calculated for the two regions. In order to assign species to distribution patterns in each
region separately (Table B1) the above cell numbers were reduced to half.
