WASTEWATER SUPERINTENDENT
The City of Katy, Texas, is currently accepting applications for the position of Wastewater
Superintendent. This position is responsible for supervising the operation and maintenance of the City
of Katy’s wastewater treatment plant and wastewater lift stations.
Salary: Based on experience
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential duties and functions may include the following:




















Oversees the day-to-day operation of the city's wastewater treatment facility and lift stations
Trains, assigns, evaluates and disciplines plant personnel.
Supervises treatment process and makes necessary adjustments as indicated by current
conditions; communicates maintenance needs to personnel.
Monitors performance of machinery and equipment in the treatment process; prepares plant
equipment maintenance schedule; participates in equipment maintenance and repair work.
Analyzes laboratory results to ensure proper procedures were followed; conducts follow-up tests
as needed.
Oversees the operation and maintenance of pumps, blowers, feed pumps, belt press, dry and wet
chemical feeders, aerators, telescopic settings, wet well, and other equipment used to
decontaminate wastewater.
Oversees the safety of personnel by training employees in proper safety procedures and
monitoring work in progress.
Oversees building and grounds maintenance and cleaning.
Monitors the chlorine levels and determines necessary adjustments.
Oversees the collection of wastewater samples; determines appropriate schedule for testing for
various parameters, such as chlorine residual, biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen,
suspended solids, bio-monitoring and pH.
Supervises continuous preventive maintenance program on equipment.
Inspects plant equipment; requests repairs and maintenance as necessary.
Oversees the maintenance of daily logs and records of samples and test results.
Prepares reports to regulatory agencies.
Assists in preparation and maintenance of departmental budget; initiates purchase requisitions.
Assists regulatory agencies with annual inspections of facilities.
Ensures the performance of routine cleaning of equipment and work areas.
Orders chemicals, supplies, and materials as needed; requisitions purchase orders.
May be on call after hours to respond to emergency situations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

Must possess the required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and
demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the
job can be performed.








Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, federal, state, and department wastewater
treatment guidelines and procedures and handling and application of the chemicals necessary to
maintain a safe work environment and personal safety.
Knowledge of city, department and safety.
Knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, and biology.
Knowledge of standard laboratory principles, techniques, equipment, and materials and
mechanical systems.
Skill in reading various meters, operating water pollution control equipment such as a
centrifuge, clarifier, chlorinator, samplers, and blowers.
Skill in the use of basic hand and power tools, meters, and gauges. And in operating and
maintaining laboratory equipment.
Skill in supervision.
Skill in computer and standard business software use and oral and written communication.
ESSENTIAL EXERIENCE/EDUCATION/LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:





High School diploma or GED; ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a
level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of four (4) to five (5)
years of specialized training in the field of work.
Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions and to be able
to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with two to three years’
experience or service.
Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Texas for the type of vehicle or
equipment operated.
State-certified “B” ' license for wastewater treatment is required
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is performed while sitting at a desk or table, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or
stooping. The employee lifts light and heavy objects, climbs l adders, uses tools or equipment requiring a
high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is performed both indoors and outdoors. The employee is exposed to dirt, dust, and
machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, raw sewage, hazardous and irritating
chemicals, and occasional inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as
masks, goggles, or gloves.
