Fire Drill Procedures for Aulander Elementary
We will conduct fire drills on a monthly basis at unannounced times. It is your responsibility to
make sure your class is familiar with the procedures.
Alarm Signal: One long continuous signal will sound through the system.
Clear Signal: When the fire alarm signal is turned off, this will signal that students may
return to their classrooms. In the event of a fire, you are instructed to wait until you
receive verbal instructions from the principal or counselor before returning to the
classrooms.
1. All students must move swiftly, orderly, and quietly. Books and book bags should not be
carried.
2. The teacher should check the restroom (if one is located in your classroom) and see that the
lights are turned off and the doors and blinds are closed.
3. The teacher should be the last one to leave the classroom and be at the rear of the line.
There should be NO TALKING during the drill or on the way back to the room.
4. The principal or designee will be responsible for checking the large restrooms in the
building.
5. Grade 1, 2, 3, Media, Computer, and Office Staff will go out the front door. Grade K, 4, 5,
Gym, Drama, EC must go to outside gate by gym and stand behind the monkey bars.

Lockdown Procedures for Aulander Elementary
1. An announcement will be made: Teachers, today is an orange day.
2. All doors are required to be locked immediately.
3. Place green place cards underneath the classroom door and/or in the
window if room is secure and clear of danger.
4. Place red cards underneath the classroom door and/or in the window if
room in not secure and in danger, if possible.
5. Blinds must be closed in room.
6. You must move all students to non visible areas in the room such as
bathrooms and obscured corners.
7. NO TALKING is to take place during the drill.
8. At the end of the drill an announcement will be made: Thank you for
having an orange day. In the event of a real emergency, wait for the
principal announcement or police officer present before leaving secure
locations.
9. The first 20 minutes are the most crucial stages in the event of a crisis.
Tornado Warning
1. Principal will receive notice from the Superintendent’s office or by radio.
2. The principal or designee will notify each teacher and class personally or by
a designated emergency signal (one long incessant ringing of bell) .
3. Runners will be sent to notify classes outside the building.
4. All students and staff will immediately proceed to the tornado shelter area
in accordance with the tornado shelter plan provided to each teacher.

5. The custodial staff will turn off all utilities.
6. The clerical staff will secure all records to the extent possible.
7. All teachers will take roll and advise principal of missing students and then
direct all students to assume a curled position so as to protect their eyes
and head while in the shelter area.
8. The principal will organize a search for missing students.
9. Students and staff will not return to classrooms until the principal declares
it safe to do so by five short rings of the bell.
10.Buses shall not leave on their bus routes as long as a tornado warning is in
effect for Bertie County.
11.If a tornado is visible, people who are outside should seek shelter in one of
the designated “SAFE” areas or lie face down in any low area, such as a
ditch, cover their head with their arms and remain there until the danger
has passed.
Staff members that are not assigned to a shelter area should go to the secretary’s
office.
