Pro-Seminar Series Winter 2015 organized by Lianne McTavish, Associate Chair of Graduate Studies
Please note: all pro-seminar events will take place in FAB VCD 2-38A, on Fridays between 9-11 am, unless otherwise indicated. I will be contacting all of the invited presenters before each event with more details. Volunteers for sessions are also welcome.
January 16: “Syllabus development,” with Betsy, Lianne, and Aidan. Learn how to design an introductory course, develop assignments, and select readings.
January 23: “Pedagogy and Teaching Tips,” with Lianne, Lisa, and Sean. Discuss theories of teaching and the process of writing a statement of teaching philosophy. Learn tips for teaching large classes, creating break-out sessions, and running field trips.
February 06: “Professionalization: Social Skills,” with Lianne and Natalie. Learn how to participate in conferences and art openings, ask questions in public forums, and introduce yourself to senior scholars or artists.
February 13: “How to Photograph your Work,” with Louise. Learn how to light and photograph your art work, skills you will need for (among other things) grant applications and the submission of your final thesis.
March 06: “Writing Strategies,” various creative and professional writing games with Roger
Graves. Learn how to overcome writer’s block and revise your work. All graduate students will be evaluated on their writing skills no matter which career path they ultimately choose to follow.
March 13, “Celebration of Research #2,” with presentations by Justin, Misa, Luciana, and one or two more volunteers. Build your cv!
March 20, “Working with Museums,” with visiting scholar Matthew Rampley and Joan.
Professor Matthew Rampley is the Chair of Art History and Head of School of Languages,
Cultures, Art History and Music at the University of Birmingham. Professor Rampley is an internationally-known scholar who has done research on visual culture in Austria-Hungary in the early twentieth century. He has also worked with museum interventions within wider political debates of the social and cultural identity of Austria-Hungary. During this session we will discuss a wide range of different ways of engaging with, challenging, and working within museums and art galleries.
