Overview
The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead is working with Waste Watch Services at Keep
Britain Tidy to deliver a seven week campaign in September/October 2015 designed to encourage
residents to use their food waste collection service.
The first element of the campaign (running across the all seven weeks of the campaign) involves bin
stickering. Recycling Advisors will work in a pair, led by a Team Leader, and will cover a different
collection round of the borough each day on foot. Responsibilities include:



Placing a ‘no food waste’ sticker on refuse bins placed out for collection
Meeting daily targets for the number of bins stickered
For one Recycling Advisor in each pair – collecting stickers from a central Windsor and
Maidenhead location using your own vehicle (mileage reimbursed at a rate of £0.45 per mile)
The second element of the campaign (running across the first 5.5 weeks of the campaign) involves
doorstepping – a form of direct marketing that involves a face-to-face conversation with
householders on their doorstep. Recycling Advisors will work in a team of eight, led by a Team
Leader, and will cover a different collection round of the borough each day on foot. Responsibilities
include:

Engaging with residents about the benefits and practicalities of the using the food waste
collection service and taking orders for food waste containers




Delivering a pack of food waste bin liners and a leaflet to residents
Recording information into a MS Excel file on a tablet (provided) and submitting this to the
Project Manager on a daily basis
Meeting daily targets for the number of properties visited and resident spoken to
For some Recycling Advisors in the team – collecting stickers from a central Windsor and
Maidenhead location using your own vehicle (mileage reimbursed at a rate of £0.45 per mile)
The third element of the campaign (running across the last 1.5 weeks of the campaign) involves
delivery work. Recycling Advisors will work in three pairs, and will cover a different collection round
of the borough each day on foot. Responsibilities include:



Delivering a pack of food waste bin liners and a leaflet to residents on their day of refuse
collection
Meeting daily targets for the number of properties delivered to
For one Recycling Advisor in each pair – collecting leaflets and liners from a central Woking
location using your own vehicle (mileage reimbursed at a rate of £0.45 per mile)
Additional responsibilities for the Team Leaders across the bin stickering and doorstepping activities
include:




Liaising directly with the Project Manager to ensure smooth running of the project
Managing the pair/team on a day to day basis
Organising the pair/team’s daily work plan
Ensuring that daily targets are met across the pair/team
The hours of work will vary according to the activity:





Bin stickering: Monday – Friday, 6.45am – 2.45pm with a 30 minute unpaid break (7.5 hours
per day)
Doorstepping: Tuesday – Saturday, 11am – 7pm (earlier start and finish on Saturdays) with a
30 minute unpaid break (7.5 hours per day)
Delivery: Monday – Friday, 10am – 6pm with a 30 minute unpaid break (7.5 hours per day)
Team Leaders will be required to work an additional 30 minutes per day to coordinate the
team’s activity (8 hours per day)
Two of the 10 Recycling Advisor positions are ‘spare’ positions designed to cover absence as
and when required during the first 5.5 weeks of the project and then work full time for the
final 1.5 weeks of the project.
These positions will provide excellent experience for those looking for a career in the environmental
sector, especially the waste and recycling industry, and are paid at above the Living Wage. Further
employment may be available at the end of this contract.
Full training will be provided.
Knowledge, skills and experience
For the Recycling Advisor and Team Leader positions, you should possess the following attributes:
Essential
 Ability to work in the UK with immediate effect








Interest in the environment/waste and recycling sector and a genuine commitment to the
principles and goals of Keep Britain Tidy
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with very strong command of English
Ability to work well as part of a team to meet performance targets
Meticulous approach to data collection
Ability to use a tablet to record data in MS Excel and submit files by email
Daily access to a wireless internet connection
Physical ability to walk long distances and willingness to work outdoors in all weather
Ability and willingness to travel throughout the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead
Desirable
 Full driving licence and access to own vehicle insured for work purposes
 Ability to communicate in a language other than English, which is commonly spoken in
Windsor and Maidenhead, particularly Polish, Punjabi and Urdu
For the Recycling Advisor Team Leader only:
Essential
 Experience of managing teams of people
 Excellent organisational skills
