About Angurugu
The Anindilyakwa people came to Groote Eylandt on songlines which
created the land, rivers, animals and people in the region. Angurugu
was an important meeting place for Groote Eylandt clans and people
coming from the mainland for ceremonies. Angurugu began as an
Anglican Church Missionary Society station in 1943, as the RAAF
needed to use the Emerald River Mission airstrip. By the 1950s almost
all the clans living on the west of the island had settled at Angurugu.
The island economy changed dramatically when manganese was
discovered near Angurugu. In 1964, the Groote Eylandt Mining
Company was granted leases on the island, and the first shipments of
manganese ore left in 1966. Groote Eylandt now produces over three
million tonnes of manganese ore each year.
The community is situated halfway down the western coast of Groote
Eylandt, on the banks of the Angurugu River. Groote Eylandt is around
650 km east of Darwin and 50 km off the Arnhem Land coast in the Gulf
of Carpentaria.
Anindilyakwa is the language of the communities of Groote Eylandt.
Population
It was estimated in 2011 that Angurugu had a population of 835 people, of whom 95% were
Indigenous.
Power and water
Electricity is supplied by a diesel generator. Chlorinated and fluoridated town water is supplied
by bore, and waste water is treated in sewerage ponds on the outskirts of town.

Access
Air
Groote Eylandt airport, located 1 km from Angurugu, is the main air access point for the island.
Owned and maintained by Gemco, the airstrip is sealed and there are flights to and from
Nhulunbuy/Darwin most days by Air North. There are also weekly flights to and from Cairns.
Road
Whilst an 18 km all weather, sealed highway links Angurugu to Alyangula, most other roads on
the island are dirt so a 4-wheel drive is essential.
Sea
There is a fortnightly freight barge service from Darwin.
Local government
The East Arnhem Regional Council, Anindilyakwa Ward provides local government services in
Angurugu. Its headquarters is located in Nhulunbuy, with a Service Delivery Centre located in
Angurugu.

Angurugu is part of the Groote Eylandt Aboriginal Land Trust, which is Aboriginal Land under
the NT Land Rights Act (NT) 1976.

Accommodation
There is no accommodation available in Angurugu. The closest accommodation house, Dugong
Beach Resort, is located approximately 18kms north of Angurugu.
Arts and culture
There is no art or cultural centre in Angurugu. The Anindilyakwa Art and Cultural centre in
Alyangula services the entire Groote Eylandt.

East Arnhem Regional Council delivers library and information services that aim to promote and
facilitate the preservation of and access to the local indigenous heritage. The libraries integrate
