Course Description: General Humanities: A study of the major artistic, intellectual and literary accomplishments of Western civilization, which dates from the Ancient to the Medieval period. In essence a “cultural history” survey class designed to both familiarize the student with the basics of our particular civilization and to foster an awareness of the broader human endeavor. Prerequisite: ENG 1213 Course Obective: Students should be able identify and appreciate the various significant cultural achievements including the cause and effect connections between time periods to understand how the world today is the product of the past. Required Texts/ Reading: The Western Humanities, Vol. I: Beginnings Through the Renaissance, and Readings in the Western Humanities 7th ed., by Matthews and Platt Course Requirements The Orientation Module is essential before beginning the class work. You are responsible for maintaining computer access to course materials. Text readings must be completed on the weekly schedule as they appear in the Learning Modules. These will made available in the course content menu at the start of each week. The weekly assigned discussions are based on literary selections. Be sure to post your first message by Wednesday 11PM to give everyone time to post the required responses. All posts must be completed by 5PM on Sunday. When posting discussions and responses restrict comments to the pertinent material. Please maintain the appropriate courteous tone and language in all your online interactions. Four exams will appear with the learning modules during the week. They are multiple choice and are date and time limited. Students should pay particular attention to the study guides provided for exam study. Attendance: Your UCOnnect email account is the official communication tool of the university. Students are expected to check it regularly to remain current about campus activities and to receive e-mail communications and announcements from the administration. With regular logins to your online class you will receive class related announcements and messages. . NOTE: I do not curve grades, either on any given assignment or for the course. Any violation of academic integrity will result in an F for the semester.
