Principal’s Summary:
March was truly Oceanography month at Florence K-8. Our second grade students
attended the Sea Life Aquarium at Arizona Mills, sixth graders went to San Diego on the
annual Oceanography trip and seventh graders went to Catalina Island. The students
loved their trips and learned about the creatures of the sea first hand. We had several
winners at the Southern AZ Science and Engineering Fair (SARSEF) held in Tucson. Maya
Valencia won 3rd place in Behavioral Science, Laylen Diggs won 3rd Place in Plant and
Animal Sciences, and Laylen also won an Honorable Mention from the Southeastern AZ
Butterfly Association. Congratulations to both Maya and Laylen!
Our spring intercession was extremely productive on many levels. We had 30 students
attend intercession which was focused and based on each student's individual academic
needs in reading and mathematics. The custodians worked tirelessly cleaning out several
buildings of very old equipment, making much needed space for our current needs. The
facilities crew cleaned up the playground area and removed some old equipement and
worked with the business office and the administration regarding future plans for the
playground and field areas. Our goal is to make the playground fun, inviting for the
children and the community, and to provide a practice field for our sports teams. We will
be working with the Leadership Academy and the Florence High School in converting part
of the field (an already fenced off area) into a working garden for our students.
I personally am looking forward to the journey ahead at Florence K-8 and building a solid
team. Before the break the school received their Chrome Books and Tablets which the
teacher and students will love! We will be reviewing our inclusion practices and hiring some
additional para professional support to help differentiate our instruction to best meet all of
the students needs. The addition of Chrome Books and Tablets will assist the teachers in
their differentiated instruction. During 4th quarter we will spend some time looking at the
data from the past year, analyzing each student's growth and achievement and
developing schedules to help fill in achievment gaps.
