HISTORY OF INDIAN KNOLL ELEMENTARY
Indian Knoll Elementary opened its doors for the first time on August 1,
2011, with an enrollment of 900 Kindergarten through sixth grade students. It
was built to accommodate new students in the rapidly growing community of
Canton, Georgia. Canton is located in Cherokee County which is one of the
fastest growing counties in the state. The school was built to house
approximately 1250 students.
The beginning of Indian Knoll School can be traced back to the 1890’s. It
is listed on the 1895 Cherokee County map. The original school was located
near the intersection of Highway 140 and Avery Road and included two
buildings. Indian Knoll was relocated to a site behind Indian Knoll Baptist
Church and included three rooms. Indian Knoll School was consolidated with
Hickory Flat School in the late 1950’s.
The current school includes 67 state of the art technologically equipped
classrooms, two computer labs, two art rooms, two music rooms, a family living
multi-purpose room, media center, gymnasium, cafeteria, and two handicap
accessible playgrounds. There are four small rooms utilized by speech and
language teachers and counselors.
Indian Knoll offers a variety of programs, including Moderately
Intellectually Disabled (MOID) and Emotionally Behaviorally Disturbed (EBD)
students. There are 90+ identified gifted students in grades one through six
representing 10% of our total school population. Indian Knoll offers an Early
Intervention Program (EIP) in Kindergarten through fifth grade for students
who are experiencing difficulties in reading and math standards. The EIP
program provides small classroom teacher to pupil ratios during specific
periods during the day. EIP students are also offered free after school tutoring
opportunities throughout the school year.
There are many extra-curricular activities offered to upper grade
students at Indian Knoll. Fifth and sixth grade students have the opportunity
to participate in IKES News Team, Safety Patrol, Flag Patrol, Jr. Beta Club, 4-H
club, Friends Club, Academic Bowl, Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl, Science
Olympiad Team, Jr. Optimist Club, Chorus and Orffestra.
The Indian Knoll music program offers not only a traditional chorus
program but an instrumental program and technology program as well. Orff
instruments were purchased by the school. These instruments include
xylophones, drums, symbols, and triangles. Our technology includes a new
24” iMacs and Yamaha keyboard along with Garage Band, iMovie, web-based
music activities, iPods and 5 software titles designed to address the 9 MENC
National Music Standards. There is a focus towards student-produced music
such as music videos, jingles, appearances in morning news, and using music
to enhance understanding of their other curricular subjects.
An academic focus has initiated flexible grouping for instruction of math
and reading, allowing an increased opportunity to challenge students to their
maximum potential. The Gifted Cluster Model enhances these opportunities
through regular classroom teachers that currently hold or are completing their
gifted endorsement. Students that require extra assistance receive help in our
Early Intervention Program. Implementation of the Accelerated Reader
Program has encouraged students to read literature.
