Program Announcement Understanding Tourette’s Disorder: Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics Thursday, March 6, 2014 Tourette’s syndrome is an often misunderstood condition that can limit an individual’s quality of life. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th edition) classifies tic disorders as neurodevelopmental disorder. Despite the neurological basis of the disorder, the individual’s internal and external environment can influence the severity of tics. Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) provides a model for effectively treating people with Tourette’s syndrome. This program will provide an overview of the basic steps of CBIT: Function-Based Assessment/Intervention and Habit Reversal (Awareness Training, Competing Response Training, and Social Support). The application of these components will be informed by the presenter’s specialized training by the leaders in the field of movement disorders, as well as her clinical experience treating individuals with tic disorders. Dr. Melanie VanDyke received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2002, where she began developing her specialty in treating anxiety and related disorders using cognitive-behavioral protocols. She completed her postdoctoral fellowship on intensive anxiety treatments at the Center for OCD and Anxiety Related Disorders at Saint Louis Behavioral Medicine Institute. Dr. VanDyke has more than 10 years of experience treating individuals with OCD, social anxiety, body dysmorphic disorder, hoarding, and Tourette’s. Dr. VanDyke works as an Assistant Professor of Psychology at St. Louis College of Pharmacy, where she continues her research on improving outcomes for individuals with anxiety-related disorders, with a current focus on family-based interventions. Dr. VanDyke presents at local and national professional meetings, and her publications include treatment resistant anxiety disorders, intensive treatment for OCD, and cognitive behavioral treatment for social anxiety disorder.
