College Mission: The mission of the College of Business is to provide a high quality, studentoriented, educational experience to baccalaureate and master's degree business students primarily
from the northwest Florida region. With a focused priority on teaching excellence, supported by
scholarship and service, the College of Business prepares students for successful careers in
business and society and, in doing so, advances the educational and economic development of
northwest Florida.
Instructor Information: John M. Trussel received his master’s degree and doctoral degree in
accounting from the George Washington University in Washington, DC. His undergraduate
degree is in accounting from the University of South Florida. He is a Florida CPA and worked in
public accounting at Deloitte Touche as an auditor. His research interests include the prediction
of events, such as bankruptcy, using accounting information.
Course Prerequisite: None
Important Note for Accounting Majors: For Accounting majors, the department recommends
grades of A or B in both ACG 2021and ACG 2071 before attempting ACG 3101, Intermediate
Financial Accounting I, and ACG 3343, Cost Accounting. Accounting majors who do not earn
at least an A or B in both ACG 2021 and ACG 2071 are not likely to be successful in their
subsequent accounting classes. The department has made this recommendation to promote better
preparation for success in the accounting program. Students are strongly encouraged to make the
commitment of time and energy necessary to excel in this class.
Course Description: Introduction to financial accounting as an information and decision support
system for users of financial information.
Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:





Analyze and record business transactions.
Prepare adjusting and closing entries
Prepare the financial statements.
Perform the steps in the accounting cycle.
Account for the assets, liabilities, and stockholders’ equity of a corporation.

Virtual Office Hours: M-R: 12:00 noon – 2:00 pm. I will answer any emails received during
this time. Any received after this time will be addressed during the next office hours. A
discussion board will be open for question at all times. I will answer questions during these
office hours. Elluminate sessions may be available online during these times. If you would like

Assignment and Exam Policies:







eLearning: This course is completely online (except for the proctored exams) via
eLearning at https://elearning.uwf.edu and MyAccountingLab (see below).
Assignment preparation via MyAccountingLab: All assignments listed in this syllabus
and announced in class are to be prepared for the class listed on the "Schedule of
Assignments.” Your solutions to the assignments should be completed on the
MyAccountingLab website. Go to www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com to sign up for
the course on MyAccountingLab. The course ID is trussel58344.
Time commitment: You should expect to spend approximately 10-12 hours per week
preparing for this course. Failure to make the proper time commitment will result in a
poor grade for the course.
Getting help: Here are suggestions for getting help with homework. Form study groups
with your classmates. Email the instructor. Use the help functions on the
MyAccountingLab site, including videos, PowerPoint presentations, and DemoDocs.
All assignments are to be completed by time and the date listed in this syllabus. All
exams are to be taken during the times and the dates listed herein. Homework
assignments and exams not completed as scheduled will result in a grade of zero for that
item. Exceptions to these policies will be allowed only in extreme cases and must be
approved by the instructor at least 24 hours before the scheduled completion time.
Students must provide documentation (the type of which must be approved by the
instructor) for said exceptions.
All assignments and dates are subject to change by the instructor. It is your responsibility
to learn about the changes on eLearning.
You must check your UWF e-mail daily for announcements.

Proctored exams: Two exams are proctored at either UWF Pensacola campus or UWF
Fort Walton Beach Campus.
Withdrawal from the Course
The last day to drop this class without penalty is June 12, 2013. You will be assigned a grade of
W. No withdrawals from courses are permitted by the Registrar after this date without an appeal
to the Registrar for limited reasons such as military orders, death in the family, documented
illness, and the like.
Incomplete Grade (I)
An incomplete grade of “I” is permitted by the Registrar only in extenuating circumstances, and
if the student has satisfactorily completed at least 75% of the course requirements with at least a
grade of C. The “I” must be completed by the end of the next semester of it will automatically
become an “F.”

Student Code of Conduct - Academic Misconduct
All students must be honest and forthright in their academic studies. To falsify the results of
one's research, to steal the words or ideas of another, to cheat on an assignment, or to allow or
assist another to commit these acts corrupts the educational process. Students are expected to do
their own work and neither give nor receive unauthorized assistance. Any violation of this
standard must be reported to the Office of Student Conduct.
Any student that engages in any form of academic misconduct, including plagiarism, will be
subject to the maximum allowed disciplinary action in accordance with the UWF Student
Handbook. Plagiarism is the use of ideas, facts, phrases, or additional information such as charts
or maps, from any sources, without giving proper credit to the original author. Using direct
quotations, paraphrases, or reproductions of any material that is not the student’s own authorship
without citation is also considered plagiarism. Failure to reference any such material used is both
ethically and legally improper.

Weather Emergency Information
In the case of severe weather or other emergency, the campus might be closed and classes
cancelled. Official closures and delays are announced on the UWF website and broadcast on
WUWF-FM.



WUWF-FM (88.1MHz) is the official information source for the University. Any
pertinent information regarding closings, cancellations, and the re-opening of campus
will be broadcast.
In the event that hurricane preparation procedures are initiated, the UWF Home Web
Page and MyUWF will both provide current information regarding hurricane preparation
procedures, the status of classes, and the closing of the University.
