Chemistry Laboratory Equipment and Apparatus Lab
Academic Chemistry
Chapter 0
Objectives:
 Identify standard laboratory equipment and apparatuses used in chemistry.
 Identify the units of measurement, if applicable, for each piece of laboratory equipment.
 Identify the safety precautions necessary for each piece of laboratory equipment.
 Differentiate between the uses of various laboratory apparatuses in terms of need, accuracy, and precision.
Background:
The purpose of this activity is for you and your lab partner(s) to explore the properties and proper implementations of
various pieces of standard chemistry course laboratory equipment. Throughout this course, you will be expected to identify,
select, and safely use each laboratory apparatus listed below. This activity will allow for you to begin recognizing apparatus
names, units of measurement, usages, and to “give it a try”. [Please note that this activity focuses on the most commonly
used apparatuses. Other pieces of laboratory equipment may be taught and implemented throughout the course of the
school year as needed.] Although most of the laboratory stations in this activity make use of only water, you are required to
wear lab goggles and aprons at all times.
Directions:
In the laboratory, you and your lab partner(s) will find 20 laboratory stations: (NOTE: You must complete one station in its
entirety before beginning the next.) Each lab station in a set will contain a laboratory apparatus, a description card, and a
procedure (if applicable.)
At each station, you and your lab partner(s) will explore the properties of the given apparatus, its uses, units of measurement
(if applicable), and a “give it a try” procedure (if applicable). Your task is to follow the directions at each lab station while
completing all fields for each apparatus listed below in the data table. Please note that you will have a limited time at each
station, and that you will be quizzed on these sets of laboratory apparatuses and equipment, so please be sure to provide
yourself with detailed notes and descriptions while working diligently. If you have any questions or need any help at all
during this activity, please feel free to ask your instructor! Have fun!
