Workshop Description:
This workshop is an introduction to the needs and ways of providing psychological
services to deaf and hard of hearing clients. Topics to be explored include: causes,
types and degrees of deaf and hard of hearing; the deaf culture; considerations for
providing both assessment and psychotherapy to deaf and hard of hearing clients;
visual communication methods; and recommendations and resources for working
with this population.
Learning Objectives:
By attending this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Discuss basic information about deaf and hard-of-hearing clients, including
etiological and epidemiological information.
2. List three basic general considerations for working with deaf and hard-ofhearing clients in both assessment and psychotherapy.
3. Describe oral and visual methods of communication with deaf and hard-ofhearing clients.
4. Describe elements of the deaf culture that are important for working
successfully with this population.
Participants:
Psychologists, mental health professionals, family therapists, social workers, school
psychologists, and school counselors.
Presenters:
Nate Glassman, Ph.D. received his doctoral degree in Rehabilitation Psychology
from the University of Arizona, with post-doctoral training in clinical
neuropsychology and forensic psychology. He is Board Certified in Clinical
Psychology. His experience with the deaf community began in 1980 and has
extended across numerous settings, including forensic evaluations and treatment of
deaf clients. He maintains a private practice and is a faculty member at WSPP.
Jack Spear, Ph.D. is a deaf psychologist based in Madison, WI, where he maintains a
private practice. He is also a consultant to the Wisconsin Disability Determination
Bureau. He was a staff psychologist at the former Deaf Treatment Unit at Mendota
Mental Health Institute. He was raised in a family where three of four children were
deaf. Dr. Spear was mainstreamed educationally in an era before this concept
became commonplace.
Linda Tripi, M.A. was born deaf. She earned a Master’s Degree in Administrative
Leadership in 2009. As an experienced American Sign Language (ASL) instructor,
she has taught ASL to various educational and community groups. Currently, she is
a full-time instructor at Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), and she is the
Professional Development Chairperson of the American Sign Language Teacher
Association.

Continuing Education Credit:
WSPP is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing
education for Psychologists. WSPP maintains responsibility for the program and its
content. This program earns 6 CE credits.
Travel Directions and Parking:
TAKE I-43. EXIT AT COLLEGE AVE. GO EAST. TURN RIGHT ONTO HOWELL AVE
MATC is at the southwest corner of College Ave. and S. Howell Ave. The entrance to the
parking lot is off of S. Howell (not College). When you turn right into the campus entrance,
keep left and follow the road to Student Parking Lot B, or turn right and follow the road to
Student Parking Lot C. Building A is in front of the parking lot.
To avoid getting a ticket, park in Student Lot B or C. There is no charge for parking. The
workshop will be held in: Building A just inside Entrance #13; Lecture Hall A, Room A241.
