Position Purpose UNIS’ Queens Campus has an immediate opening for part-time learning success specialists with expertise in reading, writing, math and executive functioning skills. The learning success specialist will be part of the divisional Student Success Team under the guidance of the Director of Student Support and Success. He or she will be responsible for teaching classes and workshops in study skills and organization; providing in class co-teaching and coaching to build teacher capacity and skills in differentiation and engaging lessons for diverse learners; providing one-on-one and small group academic and organization support for middle and upper school students; and participating in faculty, parent and community awareness and development in these areas. Since communication skills are the foundation of education, reading, writing and organization are central elements of our curriculum. Working with UNIS’ curriculum specialists, Grade Level Coordinatiors and faculty, the Learning Success Specialist should be a team player; have a robust understanding of child and adolescent development; and be open and creative in ways to help each of our students achieve his or her full potential. Appropriate candidates should also have a broad knowledge base and experience in traditional, innovative and differentiated best practice pedagogies; possess a thorough understanding of student assessment practices and classroom implications; be creative in the use of ageappropriate strategies and techniques to help students achieve their full potential; and have excellent oral and written communication skills for collaborating with students, faculty and parents. We seek faculty whose focus on children and their learning success is as important as their own disciplines, who treat their students as individuals with disparate yet valuable gifts and who are excited to work with early adolescents and their parents. Candidates should have an advanced degree in special education or related field; possess at least three years teaching experience as a learning specialist, preferably at both junior (elementary) and middles school levels; and have a comprehensive understanding of cognitive development and neuropsychological testing. Individuals with special education certification and experience are preferred. In addition, candidates need to be comfortable with the use of technology for record-keeping and documentation of services provided in accordance with New York State laws; maintain current pertinent data for each student through periodic review and documentation within the individual student’s electronic and paper records. The individual in this position will also provide other duties and services as assigned by the Director of Student Support and Success.
