The Polo School District elects its Board Members through the congressional township method. No more than 3 board members can come from any one township. The northern mile of Woosung Township is part of the Buffalo Congressional Township. This election had 2, 2 year unexpired terms, with 5 candidates. o The 2 year terms will be seated first. o The winners of the 2 year term are Matt Mekeel and Jenny Grobe. o They both represent Buffalo Township. o That will put 3 board members from Buffalo Township as Dave Bucher currently represents Buffalo Township. Next the candidates running for a four year term will be seated. o Yancy Webster will be seated as the top vote getter from Woosung Township. o The second vote getter was Ron McDermott from Buffalo Township. He cannot be seated as the Board can only have 3 members from Buffalo Township. o The candidate with the 3rd most votes is Mike Ryan from Lincoln Township and he will be seated on the Board. o The candidate with the 4th most votes is Brandi Cisketti from Buffalo Township. She cannot be seated as the Board can only have 3 members from Buffalo Township. The Board of Education will have 5 members when they seat the new Board at the beginning of May. There will be 2 open seats that need to be appointed from outside of Buffalo Congressional Township. In this year’s election 77% of the vote came from Buffalo Township. However 4 of the 7 Board members must come from outside of Buffalo Congressional Township District. 8 years ago the Board ran a referendum to change to an at-large method. It was defeated by a count of 201-240. It needs to pass in all nine townships and it only passed in Buffalo and Grand Detour. o However there is SB 82 that may amend the School Code. This will allow the district to put the at large option on the ballot and it will only need to pass by a 2/3 vote of all voters in the district.
