Hot Club Trio Tribute to Grappelli
King’s Lynn Festival-goers all have their favourite memories of concerts over the years –
and for many the visit of legendary jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli is still fresh in the
memory.
His magical music will be recreated in fine style and with great authenticity at this
summer’s festival when Mike Piggott’s Hot Club Trio takes to the stage.
An acclaimed jazz violinist in his own right, Mike Piggott will celebrate Grappelli’s
musical style with guitarist Nils Solberg – who grew up in Norfolk – and double bass
player Peter Morgan.
They have well-founded credentials, having all played with Diz Disley who was an
influential figure in the second half of Grappelli’s career. Disley brought Grappelli to
events in Britain such as Cambridge folk festival and introduced him to a young
audience.
Grappelli’s appearance at Lynn Festival in 1974 was with the Diz Disley Trio. They
shared a concert in the Corn Exchange with the Alex Welsh Band.
“There is still a lot of interest in Grappelli’s music,” Mike Piggott said. “We mix up the
Hot Club programme with the music of others including Cole Porter, George Gershwin,
Fats Waller and Django Reinhart. Some people get frightened at the word ‘jazz’ because
it is such a vast repertoire but what we do is swing. We still get a great kick out of it,” he
said.
The Hot Club Trio will be at the Guildhall of St George at Lynn Arts Centre on Friday
