state-wide goals/options and Nicole Miller for local initiatives. Nicole will find out where Avalon
bakery is taking their food waste—heard it was going to some type of animal feed in the Lansing area.

o Portland, OR – 2012 bi-weekly & pay as you throw system, in home compost bin provided by City

San Francisco, CA - residential and commercial sectors, goal of zero waste by 2020
Vermont –state wide advocacy, currently phasing in mandatory recycling & composting program
Massachusetts- state wide policy, mandatory program, supporting projects before ban (e.g. anaerobic
digesters)
o *all case studies incorporate full-plate scrapings (meat & dairy)
o Grand Rapids, MI – Spurt Company composts pet waste, although U.S. Composting Council doesn’t
recommend it

Containers (Reusable, recyclable, compostable)
o University of Michigan- reusable container program pilot launched Nov. 2012
o Minneapolis & Saint Paul, MN – reusable container program pilot launched Nov. 2012
o Santa Monica, CA – non-recyclable plastic and polystyrene ban for all food service vendors
o Seattle, WA- polystyrene ban and all disposal products ban for all food vendors
o *would like more information on the process of these programs, issues with contaminated recyclables

Zero Waste
o UC Davis, CA goal of zero waste by 2020 for entire 10 campus system
o Nicole will add UM and update after talking with Tracy Artley.
o Kendra to talk with Nancy Ruckers and develop a case study
5) Score initiatives against criteria/impacts

Each of us do this on our own before next meeting. We will compare scores and make sure that our set of
initiatives covers our impact criteria that we want to address. We will
6) Draft presentation outline to Food Policy Council/Commissioners

After 1st quarter, presentations by all subcommittees
•
Consider presentation to WCCSWM, County Board of Public Works to include some county-wide awareness,
include some local case studies
7) Policy Action Team Goal Review
•
The Food Waste and Food Packaging Waste Subcommittee of the Washtenaw Food Policy Council will define
most appropriate policy and advocacy actions to complement actions carried out at national and local level;
Consult stakeholders and experts to identify opportunities at all levels of the food chain to minimize food waste
without compromising food safety.
8) Contact/visit with NSF - Melissa Peterson. Sometime invite WeCare Organics and UM about food composting pilot.
9) Grand Rapids food waste collection Organicycle takes to Spurt for $5/pickup – NC to check into this
10) Next Meeting: Feb 19, 3:30-5 possibly at WCC for a tour of their new earthbin at 2 p.m., then hold meeting at usual time.
