Mr. William Haithcock, Principal
Harborside Academy Habits of Success Policy: Cheating and Plagiarism
According to KUSD, Cheating/Plagiarism is the deliberate attempt to deceive the instructor by passing off
someone else's work as one's own or utilizing sources that are not allowed to complete a test. This attempt may come in
many forms and includes but is not limited to the following: copying word for word another student’s assignments (when
not allowed as part of a project or other assignment), using or copying answers from another’s test or quiz, copying or
pasting words from sources without proper citation and credit, placing one’s name on another’s paper and turning it in as
one’s own, using notes to complete a test when not allowed, etc.
Harborside Academy takes cheating and plagiarism very seriously and will work to eradicate all forms of this
academic dishonesty. As a grading community, Harborside staff identify cheating and plagiarism as a Habits of Success
issue. Students who participate in cheating and plagiarism are not showing Habits of Success consistent with the ideals
established in KUSD and more specifically EL philosophy. Harborside’s policy for Cheating and Plagiarism will include:
Inadvertent
Inadvertent Cheating/Plagiarism will be determined by a teacher’s discretion and will apply when a student, being well
intended, has forgotten to give credit to an author or source or who uses the words of another without proper citation or
acknowledgement. In cases of inadvertent Cheating/Plagiarism, the following steps will apply.
1. The staff member involved will apply re-teaching strategies (if needed) to ensure the student has adequately
acquired the skill in question.
2. The student will re-do the assignment or assessment using proper skills and giving proper credit as needed. (No
academic penalty will apply to the re-done assignment or assessment. A time frame for re-done work will be
established by the teacher).
Advertent
Advertent Cheating/Plagiarism will be identified as a student’s willful academic dishonesty by passing off others’ work as
his/her own work in an attempt to deceive his/her teacher or in order to achieve higher grades.
1. The student will re-do the assignment or assessment using proper skills and giving proper credit as needed. (No
academic penalty will apply to the re-done assignment or assessment. A time frame for re-done work will be
established by the teacher).
2. There will be an immediate loss of 5 Habits of Success points applied to the classroom subject to which the
cheating occurred.
3. A character assignment (to be determined in conjunction with the student, their classroom teacher and the
Principal / Dean of Students) will be assigned that must be completed to avoid any further character loss and/or
consequence being applied. This assignment must be complete prior to re-doing the assignment.
4. A 2nd infraction will result in automatic failure of Habits of Success grade for the subject that the cheating /
plagiarism occurred (even if the subject is not the same subject as the initial violation). The student will then be
assigned to Habits of Success Intensive.
5. Further infractions will result in an immediate referral to the CSI process.
Understanding that students have rights to due process, if a student believes that he/she have been accused of
cheating/plagiarism without merit, he/she will have the right to appeal. The following steps will be used to appeal an
accusation of cheating/plagiarism: The student will submit, in writing, a letter of appeal to the school principal and/or
designee. A meeting will be held with the student, his/her parent or guardian, the teacher of the subject where the
cheating / plagiarism was alleged to occur, the school principal and/or the Dean of Students.
