ABSTRACTS JAIME CHARLES, 2012, A STUDY OF PERSUASIVE EXPRESSIONS USED IN BARACK OBAMA’S SPEECH. ADVISORS (I) PROF DR. D. WAGIMAN. A, MA, (II) DRS ANDI ROESTIONO, MPD This study is concerns with persuasive expressions used in Barack Obama’s speech. The writer formulates three problems, they are: (1) What kinds of persuasive expressions are used by Barack Obama?, (2) What elements of persuasive expressions are used by Barack Obama?, and (3) How are the purposes of persuasive expressions applied by Barack Obama? In this analysis, the writer uses a qualitative approach since the data collected are in the form of words and sentence. He also uses a content analysis technique because it gives easiness to analyze the data. The source of data is Barack Obama’s speech in the State of the Union 2010. The procedures of data collection are: (1) Reading and note taking, (2) Segmenting the speech into paragraphs, and (3) Identifying the persuasive expression and its element. The procedures of data analysis are: (1) Classifying the persuasive expressions used by Barrack Obama, (2) Finding the elements of persuasive expression used by Barrack Obama, and (3) Describing the purpose of persuasive expressions applied by Barrack Obama. After analyzing the data, the writer finds that persuasive expression are classified into five categories; they are: (1) Compromise, (2) Taunting, (3) Subliminal message, (4) Random comment, and (5) Big words. The writer also finds that there are four elements in persuasive acts, which are: (1) Source, (2) Message, (3) Public, and (4) Effect. Moreover, the purposes of persuasive expressions are to inform, to persuade, and to actuate. Based on the research findings the writer concludes that persuasive expressions are very important in speech. Without persuasive expression, speech among the speaker and hearer will be not complete. It is essential for the speech to use persuasive expressions and its elements to achieve trust from hearer.
