Learning Targets for Waves The student will know: Waves are rhythmic disturbances that carry energy. Waves transmit energy but not matter. Waves are classified as either transverse or longitudinal. Wave speed is determined by the medium. F=1/t, V=f𝜋, T=1/f The student will be able to: Investigate and analyze characteristics of waves, including velocity, frequency, amplitude, and wavelength, and calculate using the relationship between wave speed, frequency, and wavelength. Investigate behaviors of waves, including reflection, refraction, diffraction, interference, resonance, and the Doppler effect. Describe the role of wave characteristics and behaviors in medical and industrial applications. Distinguish between ultrasound and x-ray. Student Understanding (student friendly TEKS): I know waves carry energy. I can draw and label longitudinal and transverse waves. I can calculate using v = fλ. I can give examples of transverse and longitudinal waves. Academic Vocabulary: Amplitude Frequency Longitudinal wave Transverse wave Reflection wavelength Language of Instruction: Constructive Interference, Destructive Interference, Superposition, Rhythmic disturbance, Energy, Wave, Parallel, Perpendicular, Medium, Velocity, Period, Crest, Trough, Compression, Rarefaction
