Course Title: Agricultural Mechanics and Metal Technologies Lesson Title: Using measuring and marking devices TEKS Addressed in Lesson: 130.22 3 B http://ritter.tea.state.tx.us/rules/tac/chapter130/ch130a.html Lesson Objectives. The student will be able to: 1 2 3 Mark lumber for correct measurements prior to cutting Measure correct length and width for cutting Read and reduce fractions to 16th,s to mark and measure correct dimensions as assigned Tools and Equipment Tape measure steel rulers wood rulers try square 6”by6” by ¼ “ wood stock #2 pencils or carpenters pencils Key Terms / Vocabulary reducing fractions down to 16th’s try square tape measure wood stock width length edge Interest Approach/Anticipatory Set Students will be constructing simple lab projects to specific measurements per various sketches and drawing in AFNR lab. It is important to know how to properly mark and measure dimensions per blueprints and assigned measurements. Accuracy is critical in doing a job right and to reduce waste Teaching Plan and Strategy / Presentation of New Material 1 Students will be given a platform stock piece 2 Students will use one side of stock to measure the width of 10 assigned measurements using tape measures, try squares, and steel rulers and drawing a line the designated width. 3 Students will use the other side of wood stock to measure the assigned length (height) of ten assigned measurements 4 Students will mark and measure lines; remember to reduce all fractions to lowest common denominator. Activity/Application/ Student Engagement /Laboratory Students will receive a lab sheet with designated width and length inches and fractions to measure. Students will do their own work with reinforcement/ re-teaching provided by the instructor. Upon completion of the 20 assigned measurements, students will label and turn in their stock for a grade. Evaluation / Summary Instructor will apply a tape measure and one other device to determine the accuracy of each measurement References/Additional Materials / Extended Learning Opportunities/ Enrichment IMS Online, Stanley Speed Square™ materials and charts College & Career Readiness Standard Mathematics IV - Measurement 1a, b, c, d, 2A ©Texas Education Agency, 2015
