Terms of Reference and Meeting Topics December meeting - no theme/topic decided yet Marcia suggested asking Valerie Hanson (Echuca) for an update on Words on Wheels at December meeting Mylee Joseph (State Library, NSW)emailed Marcia to say her group is happy to send her to attend one of these meetings and for a Victorian member to attend a NSW HLS group meeting, however Mylee has not yet responded re her possible attendance at the September meeting Mylee indicated that the NSW group is happy to allow us to participate in their e-list Marcia to contact Valerie Marcia to find out more about e-list Marcia and Caroline attended a PLVN SIG meeting last week It was determined that SIG should aim to work on one project per year Suggested SIG project for this year be to look at the National Standards for HLS and re-evaluate (Current Guidelines were written in 2000) to align with PLVN SIG terms of reference NSW Guidelines are different. Marcia and Donna are researching the Guidelines for other library services – including overseas. 1 Page | Minutes of Meeting of Home Library Service Special Interest Group held on Monday 7 th March 2011 .Cath Lukin has started to investigate using Survey Monkey (surveymonkey.com) as a format for a questionnaire for Guidelines Project Patricia suggested that the survey should be sent to library managers to vet Marcia said we have criteria for participants but not for volunteers Helen brought along Volunteering Australia: National Standards, Workbook and Resources Kit (3 volumes – price c$100) for members to look at 2012 Workshop Mylee J sent Marcia an email outlining what the NSW HLS group did at their workshop. Volunteers for members of the planning subcommittee are: Brigitte Gallagher (Moreland) Lilly Chorney (Melbourne) Jadwiga Ridd ( Maribyrnong) Helen Pickersgill ( Ballarat) Maralyn Frances (Melbourne) - convener Suggestions for proceeding were discussed (eg developing a budget, catering, sign up service through MAV, outline proposal to PLVN by June 2012, hire of room - MAV room 1101 can accommodate 70 people and has necessary technology. Need to book room as soon as a date has been finalised 4. General business Maralyn to contact volunteers re first subcommittee meeting Before June meeting Jo and Marcia to send documents/templates relating to 2010 Workshop to Maralyn Asap Proposal to be sent to Caroline Macvean, Elizabeth Jackson when completed By 30 June 2011 Change of Group Name Maralyn suggested that the Group consider a change of name to reflect its broader focus on outreach/community issues as well as HLS Patricia proposed that the suggestion be put to Caroline Any suggestions for a new name will need to be presented to the Community Participation and Engagement Subcommittee for consideration and approval Multicultural Services Group Rita suggested connecting with the Multicultural Services Group Letizia Mondello is organising a Multicultural language seminar Frontline It was suggested that members might be interested in having the staff at their libraries undertake Frontline training (openingthebook.co.uk). Lilly is a supervisor and Maralyn is her trainee (both at Melbourne L. S.) Guest Speaker – Josh from Vision Australia Josh spoke about Vision Australia’s mission to assist a wide range of people with vision impairment including dyslexia and diseases such as multiple sclerosis 2 Page | Minutes of Meeting of Home Library Service Special Interest Group held on Monday 7 th March 2011 VA assist around 20,000 people around Australia They are keen to work in partnership with other libraries as a free add-on to current service Josh brought along Braille books, a tactile picture book (Braille is superimposed on top of printed text) and a children’s Phoenix kit. He demonstrated some of the functions of the Daisy player For people who need audio textbooks Josh recommended Bookshare (www.bookshare.org) Bookshare scans books and then reads them aloud FaHCSIA/ALIA "Increasing Accessibility Library Initiative" (Library Initiative) The Federal Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) is working in partnership with ALIA to provide a variety of technology to print disabled people. They have just gone to tender.
