MEMORIALIZATIONS ALTAR CANDLES John Baldini Requested By: Mom & Daddy NOTES FROM THE LOFT 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time August 9, 2015 On Monday night, August 10, our parish will begin its celebration of Our Lady’s Assumption with the opening of the Eucharistic devotion known as FORTY HOURS. The number ‘40’ was chosen to signify the forty hours Christ’s Body lay in the tomb. A CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA article states the practice began in Milan in May 1537 with Pope Innocent III giving it an indulgenced status by 1539 at the urging of the Faithful. Its original purpose was twofold: 1. “to appease the anger of God” for the offenses of the Catholic people; and 2. to beg God’s protection against the growing danger of invasion by the Turks, who threatened not only the Church but Western Civilization itself. Its origins are unclear. Evidence points to a Capuchin Father, Joseph Piantanida da Fermo, as the organizer of a system which created consecutive Exposition, forty hours at a time, from church to church throughout Milan for a full year! Another source points to a Dominican, Father Thomas Nieto, and a Barnabite priest, St. Anthony Maria Zaccharia as the Milanese founders. The devotion became so popular that St. Charles Borromeo, the Cardinal Archbishop of Milan, issued guidelines on how to conduct these extended periods of prayer. In Rome, St. Philip Neri and the Oratory Fathers had created a similar practice facilitated by the leadership of Blessed Juvenal Ancina, himself an Oratorian and Bishop of the Piedmont area. Their contemporary, St. Ignatius Loyola, also organized Forty Hour devotions annually during the celebration of Carnival to atone for its sinful influence. In her online article, “St. John Neumann and the 40 Hours Devotion” Jan. 2008, Linda O’Brien writes of the strong anti-Catholic feeling which surfaced in Philadelphia in the 19th century. In the wake of the burning of the churches of St. Michael and St. Augustine, his priests urged Bishop Neumann to abandon his plan to introduce the FORTY HOURS devotion. One night Neumann fell asleep at his desk. A candle burnt down, charring papers. Suddenly awakening, he heard a voice saying, “As the flames are burning here without consuming or injuring the writing, so shall I pour out my grace in the Blessed Sacrament…Fear no profanation…carry out your design for my glory.” And he did – in St. Philip Neri Church, Queen Street! Dismissing the unborn as less than human and allowing abortion impedes the work of social justice. He points out with urgency, “While the poor of the world continue knocking on the doors of the rich, the world of affluence runs the risk of no longer hearing those knocks, on account of a conscience that can no longer distinguish what is human” (n. 75). The next Respect Life Holy Hour will be on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at 7:00 PM CARDINAL’S APPEAL 2015 Cardinal Dolan said: “I pray that you will join me and consider renewing your commitment to the Church in New York with a gift to the Cardinal's Annual Appeal. I ask not for me, but on behalf of the thousands of men, women and children who are so grateful for your love and care. Please help me in making the Appeal a success”.
