If your Doctor has told you that your BP is too high he/she may have suggested that regular, gentle exercise, as part of a lifestyle change, could help to bring it down as it would strengthen your cardiovascular system and help you to lose weight [if that is required]. The most effective type of exercise is usually prolonged aerobic exercise carried out at a moderate level, not marathons or gym circuit training. Activities such as brisk walking [with the dog?], light cycling, swimming or gardening can all help towards significant improvement in BP. They can also contribute to good weight control and improved energy and concentration while reducing risk of stroke, Type 2 Diabetes and certain Cancers. Activities that require explosive bursts of energy, such as weight lifting, squash, sprinting and other contact sports should be avoided as they place a heavy load on the heart. Successful exercising is more about changing how you think as well as what you actually do. If you see it as a chore you are probably doing the wrong exercise. Ask a friend or friends to join you on walks or join a gentle exercise class, there are a lot on offer.
