FRITHWOOD SURGERY PPG NEWSLETTER
High Blood Pressure?
If your Doctor has told you that your BP is too
high he/she may have suggested that regular,
gentle exercise, as part of a lifestyle change,
could help to bring it down as it would
strengthen your cardiovascular system and
help you to lose weight [if that is required].
The most effective type of exercise is usually
prolonged aerobic exercise carried out at a
moderate level, not marathons or gym
circuit training. Activities such as brisk
walking [with the dog?], light cycling,
swimming or gardening can all help towards
significant improvement in BP. They can also
contribute to good weight control and
improved energy and concentration while
reducing risk of stroke, Type 2 Diabetes and
certain Cancers.
Activities that require explosive bursts of
energy, such as weight lifting, squash,
sprinting and other contact sports should be
avoided as they place a heavy load on the
heart. Successful exercising is more about
changing how you think as well as what you
actually do. If you see it as a chore you are
probably doing the wrong exercise. Ask a
friend or friends to join you on walks or join a
gentle exercise class, there are a lot on offer.
The immediate benefits
While you want to be more physically active
for the long term benefits, the immediate
benefits in well-being will really keep you
motivated on a daily basis.

“If exercise could be purchased in a pill, it
would be the most beneficial medicine in the
nation” - Dr. Robert H Butler MD Founding
Director of the National Institute on Ageing.

addition a further part time Phlebotomist,

So don’t be surprised if when booking an
appointment to see a nurse that you will be
gently guided to one of the new staff - Thank
you!
It has been all change for the Registrars as

being implemented in the Practice. These are
necessary because of the increased workload

“Another Important Event”
Frithwood Surgery PPG Lottery
In January this year the PPG launched a fund
raising initiative to purchase and update
equipment for the surgery, 200 patients
signed up and by December twelve patients
will have won £100, twelve will have won £60
and twelve will have won £40. Even better
news is that the £2400 raised as a result of
the lottery will have been used to purchase
an ophthalmoscope, an otoscope, a 24 hour
blood pressure monitoring device and a
wheel chair.
All contributing to the
maintenance of quality patient care.
It is now time to sign up players for the 2016
year so that we can keep the surgery well
equipped. They need a dematoscope which
is used in the early diagnosis of skin cancer, a
pulse oximeter to assist with the diagnosis of
a number of health problems.

It’s that time of year when the annual “PPG’s
Over 75s Christmas Party” takes place. This
year it will be on Saturday 12th December at
the usual venue - Eastcombe Village Hall,
2.00 - 4.00pm.
If you wish to attend please let the Surgery
know so that all arrangements can be made.
Transport can be laid on if required.
Please note
For many years the words 'you are off to
hospital for treatment' has always meant
Gloucester, Cheltenham or Stroud. Now
there are specialist treatment centres to
which you may be sent which are further
afield. In the case of heart problems you may
be sent to Bristol Royal Infirmary which has
an excellent cardiac unit. Great for the
patient but not so good for partners and
friends to visit. The facts are that there is one
National Express Coach a day leaving early
evening; a train journey means Stroud to
Swindon and change trains for Bristol and a
taxi to the BRI. Public transport is both
lengthy and costly. However, the following
local taxi companies will undertake the
journey door to door they are:RKB Taxis [Roy Bunce] 07766252946 or
