Brief History of Diversity in ACCTA (Last Revised October 2006) Inception of Standing Committee on Diversity (SCD) Inception of Culture Sharing Introduced by Jay Zimmerman and Patricia Vigil in 1992, Jekyll Island, GA Inception of Diversity Scholars program 1993 is the first recipient according to the ACCTA website Re-writing Preamble to include Diversity A SCD sub-committee was instrumental in rewriting the ACCTA Preamble and Article II that was voted on and passed during one of the business meetings at the 2001 conference (The subcommittee was Jenny Cornish, Jay Zimmerman, Lori Davis and Rosemary Simmons) Long Beach conference – minority group members asking to meet privately (people differed on if they felt this was a good thing or not so good), this led to development of Affinity Group time The Long Beach conference forum was on October 8, 2001. It was followed by the Santa Fe town hall meeting in 2002 which led to the affinity groups introduced in 2003 at Cape May, NJ. The Multicultural Handbook project, via the leadership of Jenny Cornish. This began as small working groups in 2001 with Emil Rodolfa organizing the program during the Long Beach Conference. Jenny then took over the project in 2002 and has had annual meetings since then. SCD Mission Statement written during the 2003 ACCTA conference in Cape May, NJ. The ACCTA by-laws committee requested that a SCD subcommittee create a mission statement for the SCD. Dr. Nancy Coleman, Dr. Gloria Saito, Dr. Kathlyn Daily, Dr. Mary Ann Takemoto, and Dr. Julie Savage agreed to write a mission statement for SCD. Creation of the SCD listserve for conducting ongoing business through the year.
