Reviews and Reports: Guidance for parents / carers 2014-15
At the end of each half term your son/daughter’s work on each academic course will be
reviewed by teachers and reported on. This takes place as part of the continuing one-to-one
support which is recorded on your son/ daughter’s Individual Learning Plan (ILP). At least
once a half term your son/daughter will be given effective feedback by each of their teachers
on their work. All teachers will record targets for improvement on your son/daughter’s ILP.
ILP Targets
All targets on your son/daughter’s ILP will be regularly updated by each teacher – at least one
every half term. Targets will be SMART1 and give your son/daughter specific guidance
on what they need to focus on in their learning and work in order to make the required
improvement. Any issues concerning attendance or meeting deadlines will also be recorded.
The targets set will be focused on “how to improve” and how to achieve their Statistical Target
Grade.
Statistical Target Grade (STG)
Each course on your son/daughter’s ILP has a Statistical Target Grade (STG). This is the
student’s target grade calculated using the ALPS value-added formulae on the basis of
national comparisons in each subject. This grade will be automatically generated onto your
son/daughter’s ILP for each of their subjects and will not be altered during the time they are
studying the course. The teacher will discuss the STG with your son/daughter to ensure they
understand what it means.
Current Working Grade (CWG)
This is the current level at which your son/daughter is working given the work submitted to
date. It is not the grade for their most recent piece of work.
Agreed Target Grade (ATG)
In most cases the Agreed Target Grade (ATG) will be the same as the STG. However there
will be students who will be achieving above their STG. If this is the case then staff will set
your son/daughter an ATG which is above the STG in order to provide a stretching and
challenging target in the subject.
Each teacher will ensure that your son/daughter is clear about the three grades being set in
that subject. Each tutor will review progress in all grades with your son/daughter during their
1:1 reviews and ensure that they are clear about the targets and grades they have been set.
Grades for UCAS references
The Agreed Target Grade (ATG) will be the grade used for your son/daughter’s UCAS
reference. When the UCAS references are drafted in the summer term, a realistic ATG will be
given as the predicted UCAS grade for each subject. The predicted UCAS grade and
reference will be revised in September following summer results. Teachers and tutors will
ensure your son/daughter is clear about their predicted UCAS grade and reference.

Progress reports are sent out in the Autumn and Spring half terms for first and second years.
In addition, first years will have an extra report at the end of the summer term to reflect their
progress to date. On all progress reports there will be the three grades listed above plus an
Effort grade. Parents will be able to access each report using the parent portal.
Student / Parent Review Days
During the first half of the Spring term the College will suspend the teaching timetable for two
days in order to conduct one-to-one reviews with students and their parent / carer. Teachers
will make appointments to see student during these two days. Students are expected to make
themselves available on both Review Days. Students can ask parents/carers to attend the
review meeting.
Student / Parent review days for 2014-15 are:
Friday 6 February 8.00 – 20.00
Thursday 12 February 8.00 – 20.00
Role of the Tutor
The tutor will carry out 1:1 review meetings (up to five across each year) with your
son/daughter. These review meetings will be focused on academic performance in all subjects
and tutorial. The focus of the meeting is to review your son/daughter’s progress against
targets and how they can achieve their potential. Any issues identified will be discussed and
solutions found. Any targets the tutor may set will focus on attendance, punctuality, study
support, careers support etc. These targets will the SMART and agreed with your
son/daughter. All agreed targets will be recorded on the student record and reviewed at their
next 1:1 meeting.
Communicating with parents and carers
If a student is under 19 years old the College will communicate regularly with you about your
son or daughter’s progress. We also have a web based Parent Portal so that you can access
your son/daughters current attendance and progress online.
Personal tutors and teachers will contact you if they have a particular concern. The College
also welcome communications from you if you have any worries or queries. Details of
personal tutors or Guidance Team Leaders (GTLs) can be obtained by looking at a student’s
timetable or by phoning the College and asking for Student Services.
The College is keen to work with parents/carers wherever possible and general feedback
about our provision is encouraged. A Parents and Carers Survey is carried out at least once a
year and provides a more formal opportunity to do this.
