Title
RMIT REDBACKS Team Captain
Two positions available, the two most suited to the role will be appointed regardless of gender
Position Outline
The Team Captain plays an integral role in bringing together a large team of students who will not have met before.
The main role is to be the face and leader of the RMIT Redbacks team and to encourage all participants to get the
most out of the games experience.
Payment and references
The role of RMIT Redbacks Team Captain is fully subsidised. The RMIT package to SUG and AUG is included and
registration costs to AUS, including transport and opening ceremony ticket, is also waived. Please note this is
determined by Australian University Sport and is budget dependent on a year-to-year basis, so there can be no
guarantee this will be offered each year.
Written and verbal references can be provided post-event upon request.
Provided roles and responsibilities are carried out, applicants will be eligible to receive a certificate from RMIT
LEAD, an official authorisation of undertaking this volunteer role on their academic transcript.
A benefit of the role is a guaranteed place at SUG and/or AUG. Should a Redbacks Team Captain be forced out of
a playing role due to high quality recruits, they will still be guaranteed a place at the event as a non-playing
Captain.
Reporting Line
The Team Captain reports to the University Games Team Manager (herein referred to as the UTM).
Requirements
The Team Captain must have exceptional leadership skills. They must also have previous experience in a
leadership role and be capable of completing the following roles and responsibilities to an exemplary standard. The
Team Captain must act maturely and responsibly at all times when acting as a representative of RMIT and be an
outstanding leader and mentor to Team Managers, Sport Team Recruiters and fellow games participants.
Roles & Responsibilities
Prior to Event:





Attend orientation events at all campuses to promote University Games and find athletes, Team Managers,
Team Coaches and Sport Team Recruiters.
Have input into the strategic planning in terms of direction and processes and the execution of these plans
in order to maximise the teams’ achievements.
Ensure that proper processes are carried out with the upmost professionalism and integrity.
Attend all student leadership team meetings.
Act as liaison between RMIT athletes, Team Managers and the UTM.

During Event:





Represent RMIT in official AUS events (such as the Opening and Closing Ceremony).
Lead by example on the playing field in terms of sportsmanship, effort, spirit, motivation and actively
encourage others to support one another.
Lead by example socially. Team Captains will be expected to take an active role in ensuring team
members do not breach the Code of Conduct.
Actively participate in Team Dinner formalities and encourage the Redbacks team to support one another.
Attend any meetings as directed by the UTM.
Post Event:

Provide suggestions for event improvements and potential new leaders.
MEETING REQUIREMENTS OF TEAM CAPTAIN’S
Student Leadership meetings 2016
To be eligible for a FULL subsidy ALL meetings must be attended, from the time of your appointment.
1. Monday 7 March (Week 2, Semester 1)
2. Monday 23 May (Week 12, Semester 1)
3. Monday 18 July (Week 1, Semester 2)
4. Monday 19 September (Week 9, Semester 2)
Time: 6.30pm – 8.30pm
PLEASE NOTE:
Failure to attend meetings will not only leave students ineligible for a subsidy but students failing to attend will also
potentially be dismissed from their role. The following are the only acceptable reasons for a Team Captain
remaining in the role despite missing a meeting:
 Scheduled class clashing (evidence of this to be provided)
 medical certificate
 scheduled sport training (evidence of this to be provided).
(Part time work will not be accepted – PLEASE DO NOT APPLY for this role is you have part time work
commitments on a Monday night)
