Funding for Professional Degrees
Strategies for funding your professional degree
The best place to look for funding is within your own undergraduate or graduate institution. They often provide a unique list of
“outside funding resources” that are linked to their particular institution (e.g., a private scholarships for students at UCLA law
school with German heritage). After you have looked at institutional scholarships at your school, we suggest these resources:



Our Website: Start at www.nsfp.byu.edu/other-scholarships . Search for scholarships in your discipline using our
database. Simply refine the search using the “Categories” menu bar to select disciplines related to your degree.
Scholarship Reference Books: Search reference books in 102 MSRB. These reference books contain thousands
more scholarships than the website lists.
Other Online Websites: See http://nsfp.byu.edu/content/scholarship-search-engines to access other scholarship
search engines.

Essay Contests
Abbott & Fenner Scholarship This essay contest awards
$1,000. Usually the essay question is self-reflective and
pertains to your choice of major and professional goals.
June deadline.
Ayn Rand Essay Contest Read Ayn Rand’s novel, Atlas
Shrugged, and respond to this year’s essay prompt; first
prize is $10,000 with multiple and substantial awards given
to runners-up. October deadline.
AT&T Internet & Education Competition $1,000
scholarship competition; the contest varies by year. Please
see their website for current information. December and
June deadlines.
BYU: George H. Brimhall Contest BYU hosts this essay
contest each year at homecoming to honor the founders of
our university.$1,500 first prize. October deadline.
Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics This essay contest is open to
juniors and seniors with prizes ranging from $500-$5,000.
December deadline.
Eve’s Addiction Shine Bright Essay Contest College
undergraduates and graduate students are eligible to submit
an entry for this $1,000 award. See website for current
essay topic and deadline. August deadline.
Honor Society Awards
These funding opportunities are available to members
of particular honor societies; many of these awards
offer significant funding, so plan ahead and apply for
membership!
Alpha Lambda Delta members qualify to apply for 23
awards ranging in value from $3,000-$7,500 for
outstanding Alpha Lambda Delta graduates who are
working towards a graduate or professional degree.

Delta Sigma Pi undergraduate scholarships are
awarded to members or to their descendants. Awards
begin at $250 and go up to several thousand dollars.
June deadline.
Golden Key International Honour Society offers
both undergraduate and graduate scholarships
ranging in value from $1,000-$10,000. Scholarships
vary from study abroad funding and awards of
academic excellence to research grants. Multiple
deadlines.
Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society awards numerous
undergraduate scholarships ranging from $1,000 up to
$6,000. Those applying must be nominated by the
BYU Phi Eta Sigma chapter. March deadline.
Health
Gallagher Scholarship $5,000 scholarships are available to undergraduates pursuing a health-related career.
May deadline.
National Health Service Corps Students committed to primary care and enrolled in medical, dental, physician
assistant, nurse practitioner or certified nurse midwife training programs can receive funding in exchange for an
equal number of years (2-year minimum) of service at an approved facility in a high-need underserved area. May
deadline.
Health Resources and Services Administration’s Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students The grant
program provides funds to eligible accredited U.S. health profession schools for scholarships to students from
disadvantaged backgrounds, having financial need, and enrolled as full-time students. Grantee schools develop and
implement their own programs for recruiting and retaining students from disadvantaged backgrounds and select the
students who receive the scholarship. Check the HRSA website for a list of participating schools and see your
institution’s website for deadlines.
Law
Federal Circuit Bar Association Scholarship Series Substantial scholarships available for students (a) pursuing
a juris doctor degree, (b) enrolling for the upcoming academic year in any law school accredited by the American Bar
Association, (c) having financial need, and (d) showing a demonstrable interest in one of the many topics that lie
within the procedure, substance, or scope of the jurisdiction of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal
Circuit (e.g., international trade, government contracts, patents, trademarks, certain money claims against the United
States government, federal personnel, and veterans’ benefits). See website for details.
Human Studies Fellowship Scholarships ranging from $2,000-$12,000 are available to students who will be fulltime graduate students or undergraduate juniors and seniors who have clearly demonstrated research interest in the
intellectual and institutional foundations of a free society. See website for details.
Reiff & Bily Legal Scholarship This $1,000 scholarship is open to any undergraduate or graduate student
studying for a career in the legal field. July deadline.
Richard W. Davies Scholarship & Internship $10,000 is awarded to a first year law student. A full-time, paid
summer internship is also available in the Hubbell Leal Department at its Corporate Headquarters in Shelton,
Connecticut. See website for details.
Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard, P.C. Law School Scholarship This annual contest awards up to $2,500 for an
essay on one of three law-related topics. See website for details.
Business
George A. Nielsen—Public Investor Scholarship This $2,500 scholarship is awarded annually to two
undergraduates or graduates in the fields of public administration, finance, or business administration (or a related
field). See website for deadline.
Phi Chi Theta Scholarships This national business fraternity offers six substantial scholarships to its members.
