Year 8 GENERAL ART Teaching Program 2015 ‘Winged Lino’ Year 8 General Art - Print Semester Program Week Learning Program Assessment Unit Theme: ‘Winged Lino’ Weeks Unit Focus: 1-4 Students will be exploring the wonderful world of birds. They will complete drawings, research and exploratory studies to design a lino print based on the theme ‘winged’. Overview of Program: Hand out student brief. Describe project and discuss process of Semester. Responsibilities, goal setting and independent work: Discuss expectations and goals for the Semester. Materials and Equipment: Discuss use of materials and OHS in the classroom. All students are expected to supply their own apron, lead pencil and brushes. Task 1: Watercolour Eggs Using watercolour and pencil complete a series of bird egg studies. Focus on the use of colour and shape. Hand out egg images and materials. Teacher is to instruct students in sketching an ‘egg shape’ on their page. Students are to practice this technique until they succeed. Pencil must be really light so that it can be easily rubbed out. Teacher demonstrates use of watercolour to students. Students then add watercolour to their egg outlines. Teacher Checkpoints Materials and equipment list: (due week 2) - Apron - Brushes - Lead Pencils - Device Discuss classroom expectation: Contribute in a positive manner to all aspects of your work – including the care and cleanup of work and materials, the completion of all nominated tasks and your interaction with your Teacher and your peers Task 2: Feather Drawing Using the images supplied by your teacher, use pencil to sketch a bird feather. Work with artliner over the top to add tone and refine the drawing. Teacher distributes feather images. Demonstration steps are given one at a time for students to recreate on their page. First pencil is to be used – then artliner to complete. Students should be focusing on shape, tone and line. Task 3 : Artist influence – Margaret Preston As a class, look at and annotate examples of Preston’s prints. Discuss elements of art used – in particular: line, contrast and shape. Complete handout. Distribute handout to students. Discuss and pose questions surrounding Preston’s prints. Discuss line, contrast and shape. How have they been created? Get students to label examples as discussion takes place. Students are to answer questions on the handout. Task 3 Research & Analysis (10%) Prepare 5 x 5cm2 squares of lino for test run. Week 5-10 Learning Programme Assessment Task 4 : Lino workshop Using the egg outline from Task 1. Create a black and white patterned version that can be used for printing. You should focus on creating contrast and pattern in your design. You will then participate in a class workshop where you will learn the skills necessary to create a lino print of your egg. Teacher is to explain carving method, tools and set up required for lino. Importance of safety procedures are reinforced to students – use of bench hook to prevent slipping and hand position is always behind the cutting hand. Types of carving are demonstrated to students. Students begin carving out the white sections of their drawing. Students are shown how the printing station works. Teacher is to demonstrate printing procedure. Students are to complete several prints of their lino. Teacher Checkpoints Organise lino tools and check ink quantities. Brown paper and newspaper required for printing table. END OF TERM 11-12 Task 5 : Research Use your device to research ‘bird life’ and create at least two drawings of different creatures. Mount these onto coloured paper. Students are to use their device to draw the bird they would like to use for their final print. Pencil should be used and contrast, markings and pattern should be considered in the drawing. Students may use artliner and black marker to go over drawing. Drawing must be cut out, glued onto coloured paper and submitted for assessment. Task 6 : Pattern Use your drawings from Task 5 to decide which bird you would like to use for your final print. Develop a range of suitable patterns to fill the inside of the bird. Task 5 Visual Inquiry (30%) Prepare lino squares/rectangles for students to transfer final design. 12-20 Students will use their drawing from Task 5 and refine it further/add pattern/lines to make it suitable for a lino print. Task 7 : Lino print Using the same process as the egg, create a black and white design of your bird, transfer to lino and trace over in marker. Begin carving – remember do not carve the black areas. Cut out the background around your bird. Students are to go over their chosen drawing from pervious task with black marker to mark out the pattern/contrast and areas that will be carved out. Students are to proceed with carving – reminders of process and safety prior to commencing. Once carved, students are to print their final work. EXT TASK – Work with watercolour back into designs. Print lino onto clay to make a ceramic tray. Final product – bird life print Task 7 Studio work (60%) Ensure final print is complete.
