This guide has been produced to remind you of the broad range of Academic Support
available to you as a Student of the University of Portsmouth
Your Personal Tutor
Your Personal Tutor is there to help you make the most of your time at university by giving
you guidance and support along the way. All new students are allocated a personal tutor who
will encourage you to get the most out of your course, direct you to other sources of support
and help you achieve your goals.
Please remember that you do not have to speak to your Personal Tutor to get this support; you
could choose to seek advice from another tutor, if you prefer.
Moodle - The University's Online, Virtual Learning Environment
You can benefit from the wide range of resources available on Moodle to support you with
your studies. Moodle is available 24-hours a day, 7-days a week.
If you can access the internet you can access your online unit materials from Moodle via
smartphone, laptop or desktop computer. To use Moodle simply visit the following page and
log in with your normal network login: http://moodle.port.ac.uk/
ASDAC – Additional Support and Disability Advice Centre
ASDAC can provide advice and arrange support for all University of Portsmouth disabled
students and applicants.
Whether you are a student here already or are thinking of applying, here are some of the
support and advice services ASDAC offer to make your University experience as smooth as
possible:

Confidential advice from disability professionals
Advice on funding to cover disability-related support costs (including disabled students'
allowances)
Discussion and agreement on appropriate reasonable adjustments

ASK – Academic Skills Unit
For support with academic writing, from sentence level through to style and structure,
contact ASK, the Academic Skills Unit. Their staff can help you with other general academic
skills such as giving presentations, organising and planning your workload, and using
referencing well to avoid plagiarism.
One-to-one tutorials - Confidential tuition personalised for all campus-based or distance
learners, with evening sessions available.
Resources - Handy one or two page hand-outs which can help with anything from referencing
to revision or even to help develop your time management skills.
Skills Sessions – Experienced lecturers use a mix of teaching, discussion and activity to
develop your understanding and skills.

Faculty Learning Support Tutors
Learning Support can assist you in developing your academic skills, whether in researching,
writing, presenting, understanding feedback or revising, organising your work load and many
other academic skills.
Learning Support Tutors are there to help you develop your study skills and provide you with
additional academic support. Depending on the specialism and tutor, support may be provided
in a number of ways such as one-to-one, in small groups or through workshops.

Maths Café offers free support and help with improving your mathematical skills, and it is
open to all students. They offer Workshops, daily drop-in sessions in three different campus

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
The University of Portsmouth welcomes students from all over the world to its undergraduate
and postgraduate courses. Classes delivered by ‘English for Academic Purposes’ (EAP) are
offered in order to support students whose first language is not English and help them to
succeed in their academic programmes.

Computing and IT Support
All students can get free support and advice on IT related issues from the IT Help Advisors,
Service Desk as well as in the IT Help Centre. For more information read below.

IT Help Advisors are located at dedicated IT Help Support Desks in the Library, Park building,
Portland building, Anglesea building and in the reception areas of the main halls of residences
(16:00 - 19:30 term-time only).

Student IT Help Centre
The Student IT Help Centre is available for any University of Portsmouth student to visit to get

Would you like to learn another language?
Institution-Wide Language Programme (IWLP)
The Institution-wide Language Programme (IWLP), allows you to learn a language, for credit or
interest, as part of any course - for free. This can enhance career prospects, underpin a year
abroad with the University's Erasmus scheme, or simply satisfy the urge to speak another
language. Classes cover a range of levels depending on students' prior knowledge, and may be
taught in the daytime and/or in the evening. Languages available are: Arabic, British Sign
Language, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese and Spanish.
