This position is responsible for supporting the day-to-day virtual server operations within the EDC and supports all of the consolidated agencies and the various service offerings provided to other Commonwealth agencies. This includes design, deployment, configuration, management, monitoring, maintenance, repair, and decommissioning of server hardware, VMware hosts and related equipment. This position is a member of the EDC Technical Operations Team - Server Operations, and is responsible for all virtual server system administration of all virtual servers within EDC Managed Services and Managed Services Lite services offerings. Responsible for server deployments, configuration, management, monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and decommissioning. Performs operating system deployments which are installed using an in house developed and managed tool. Knowledge and professional applied experience with IBM server diagnostic tools, RAID controllers, BIOS configurations, and firmware. Detailed knowledge of different RAID levels, NIC teaming, and Microsoft Clustering Service. Responsible for following EDC standards when deploying servers and other equipment within all environments. These standards include change management, cable management, and inventory management. Responsible to inventory all new servers and other hardware when received and verify all equipment was received based on the purchase order. Server inventory includes CPU, memory, hard drive, NIC, and HBA quantity and configuration. When deploying a new server, this position is responsible to update the inventory system with all required information including hostname, IP address, patch cable numbers, etc. Knowledge and professional applied experience with configuring Cisco network equipment in multi-protocol networks, and other protocols such as DNS, WINS, DHCP, routing. This position is required to configure network ports when deploying servers and other networked hardware. Port configurations include VLAN ID, speed, duplex, etc. Responsible for building VMware hosts. Provisions and deploys virtual machines. Initiates requests, installs and configures new virtual infrastructure components. Performs capacity planning for the virtual server environment on a regular basis to ensure the planned and anticipated growth can be accommodated. Maintains awareness of, tests and installs VMware software patches. Manages data stores for virtual infrastructure. Responsible for maintaining IBM Director deployment to monitor server hardware. Responsible for performing backup and restore duties when needed. Responsible for maintaining DSView software. This includes any upgrades, issues or new features of the software. Responsible for performing system and infrastructure maintenance in accordance with Commonwealth ITB-SYM010. Service impacting maintenance is required to be performed during non-business Commonwealth designated maintenance windows. Responsible for reviewing and following up on agency/customer trouble tickets through the enterprise remedy system per existing service level requirements. Responsible for reviewing monitoring alerts for servers and network hardware and responding appropriately to correct the problem reported. Responsible for the daily operations of the Enterprise Data Center production/infrastructure environment. This function supports the requirement for systems operations, systems maintenance, back-up/recovery, disaster recovery, as applicable and other system and production support requirements. Also provide specific technical analysts that support the various operations personnel for troubleshooting assistance when necessary. Provides EDC technical support functions of deployed technologies such as systems administration, domain management, network support, technology architecture, as well as providing liaison support for the various services and help functions within the consolidated agencies. Maintains currency with technology in order to make recommendations to departmental management on the technological direction of the agency's network infrastructure. Evaluates server configurations and performance statistics to ensure maximum operating efficiency. Provides direction to Exchange Network Management Team, Application Management Team and agency staff in implementing changes to server configurations. Develops plans for and manages upgrade of software to ensure version consistency among agencies within the EDC and to ensure all customers have access to the latest tools that will allow them to work in the most productivity and efficient manner possible. Develops and implements operating procedures for staff within the Technical Operations Team to guide end user requests for support and service. Provides technical guidance to Commonwealth agencies during the deployment of servers and systems within the EDC co-location services offering. This includes software and hardware recommendations for servers. Provides direction to the agencies in identifying operational problems related to hardware components; software (both client and server level); network servers, network operating system software and related networking components such as hubs, routers, switches, etc.; and messaging system servers and software; and remedying these problems in an expeditious manner to minimize worker downtime and lost productivity. Meets with managers and IT Staff from all agencies to ascertain requirements and to provide consulting assistance to determine the appropriate computing devices and related equipment for use within those offices. This position is required to be On-Call 24/7 on a rotating basis with other team members. While On-Call, this position is required to respond to critical incidents, production alerts, and customer tickets. Travels and responds to after hour support for technical assistance on an as needed basis. Performs other related duties as assigned, to include those outlined in the CoG Plan when the Plan is activated.
