Going to the Dogs
During the past few weeks, you have been
learning about heredity, selective breeding and
natural selection. You have learned how to identify
dominant and recessive traits and explain the
phenotype based on the genotype. For the
purpose of this project, you will hypothetically
breed two dogs to create your “designer dog!”
Project requirements:


You will have 5 task to complete throughout this project.
You will be researching dog breeds.

Task 1: You will answer the 5 questions provided to you on January 28,
2015
o You will have to type out question, answer, and source of your answer.
 Did dogs come from wolves and how?
 What were the first dog breeds?
 How did we get so many different breeds of dogs?
 How come some breeds of dogs have certain health problems?
 How do you get a “designer dog”?

Task


Task 3: Pick two parents and the traits you want passed on

 Where did the dog originate from (ex. Australia)
o You must write a goal: What two breeds do you want to mix and why (what
traits do you want to see passed on to the dog?)
1

Task 4: Create your Display
o You must use a poster board for your display (NOT A TRI-FOLD) 22” X 28”
o On your display you will have these items:
 Title: Going to the Dogs
 Completed questions from Task 1
 Chart from Task 2 with the 5 pictures of the breeds.
 Pictures of the two parents (resources need to be noted on the back of
the poster) with their desirable traits, interesting facts and health
problems. (may be in form of a chart or list) (sources must be on back
of poster)
 A created picture of what you think your designer dog would look like
(may be hand drawn, painted, colored, collaged, and or computer
designed picture.)
 The list of your designer dog’s traits.
 Illustration of dogs to wolves over time (source must be on research
page) (Evolution of dogs)
 On the back of your poster you will need your name, class period,
teacher’s name, and list of resources you have used for your project.
Your poster should be standard poster size. You can find them at: Walmart, Walgreens, Target, Office
Max, Office Depot, & occasionally at CVS, Kroger, &/or HEB.
You may place items on your poster in any arrangement an example of an arrangement is provided. You

If you use a picture from a website, book, magazine please have the source written or typed on
the resource page that should be glued on the back of the poster!!
Neatness and Creativity will be considered for your grade.

Task 5: You will have your completed poster and present your findings to
the class.
o You will be given 3 minutes to present your information
o You may use note cards
o You will be presenting all the items on your board.
o You will be presenting why you have chosen the two breeds to make your
designer dog
Keep in mind your project must be printed and assembled prior to being brought to
school on the day it is due. Your work needs to be your own plagiarism rules will apply
