Board Approved: April 8, 2014 Job Description Long Beach School District 19148 Commission Road Long Beach, MS 39560 Job Title: Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Job Summary: The athletic director is responsible for coordination, supervision and evaluation of all aspects of the interscholastic extra-curricular programs in Grades 7-12. The head football coach implements leadership, management and oversight strategies designed to enhance the football experience for Long Beach High School students in accordance with the goals of the District. Reports to: Superintendent and/or designee Supervisory Responsibilities: Assists and contributes to the supervision and evaluation of coaches and other instructional personnel as directed by the Superintendent. Payment Rate: A combination of teaching and administrative salary schedules Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Establish the fundamental philosophy of the athletic programs in coordination with Long Beach School District’s Goals & Objectives. a. Responsible for the instruction of LBSD students/athletes in the fundamental skills, strategies, and physical training necessary to meet the district and department goals. b. Coordinate gym, building and athletic field use with all extra-curricular activities and maintain the building use calendar. c. Work with coaching staff and transportation supervisor to schedule all athletic departure times and provide bus supervision with trip sheets. d. Take care of travel arrangements and overnight accommodations for all players or athletic teams and coaches competing in postseason competition. e. Hire all officials for 7-12 athletics. f. Submit athletic expense request sheets for payment of officials and other workers to the district. g. Secure game workers for athletic contests, chain crews, announcers, clock operators, score keepers, line judges, etc. and submit the list of contacted workers for that contest to the event supervisor prior to the event. h. Ensure district adherence to all MHSAA and district policies, administrative rules, procedures, and codes relating to and participation in athletics. 2. Implement the LBHS Extra-Curricular Code and other related school policies and procedures. a. Possess a thorough knowledge of the LBHS Extra-Curricular Code and is responsible for its implementation by the entire staff. b. Responsible to hold annual meeting of players and parents to cover topics included in the athletic department Pre-Season Sports Information meeting checklist and maintain on file a properly completed physical card for every student participating in athletics. c. Provide and explain school and team training rules and any other specific team policy. d. Determine initial discipline and follows due process involving students and contacts administration when a student is to be suspended or dropped from the program. Contact parents immediately following suspension or dismissal of a student from the team. e. Consult with appropriate school officials and have a working knowledge of student-athletes academic progress. f. Supervise, either personally or through staff delegation, a program to ensure adult supervision of locker rooms anytime students are present. g. Coordinate with the Athletic Training staff to complete paperwork when required on behalf of students. Adhere to school policy in regard to student release from care for games and practices. Board Approved: April 8, 2014 Job Description 3. Set a tone in all extra-curricular programs that engenders team achievement, community spirit and academic endeavor. a. Mediate the resolution of problems, issues, and concerns that may arise between coaches and athletic programs. b. Provide a channel through which students and the community may express their concerns about an athletic program. 4. Provide leadership and motivation to Coaches and program members. a. Responsible for supervising, advising, coordinating and supporting a staff of Assistant Coaches in conjunction with respective Building Principals. b. Articulate and coordinate a planned program for all levels of the extra-curricular programs. c. Coordinate the collection of rosters for program information as needed. d. Conduct pre and post-season meetings as well as professional opportunities for staff. e. Plan, schedule, organize, and communicate an organized program of practices. f. Seek out and secures professional growth and development opportunities as provided by LBHS and other agencies. g. Develop and foster relationships with district feeder program coaches and athletes. 5. Develop and maintain good public relations with parents, alumni, officials, fans and news media. a. Accept and recognize that the football and all other sports programs have a considerable component of public exposure and a significant influence on the entire school community. These inherent pressures are a considerable responsibility but must be kept as secondary to the objectives of good sportsmanship and lifelong learning and emotional health for students. b. Promote the sports within and outside the school community. Submit timely and accurate information as required by local media. 6. Responsible for all management issues related to successful operations of the football program. a. Has knowledge of MHSAA, and other affiliated league policies and regulations; implements it consistently and interprets them for staff and students. b. Seeks information about and attends all required state, league and department meetings. Shares information with staff and requires attendance where appropriate to benefit growth of staff. c. Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation and at season’s end, analyze staff effectiveness through the LBSD coach evaluation process. d. Maintain necessary forms, record and file paperwork as required by the Director of Athletics, MHSAA and District requirements. e. Coordinates with the appropriate Athletic Department staff members to hold scheduled sports events and practices. Notify the athletic department when changes occur in game or practice schedules. f. Oversee and reports condition of equipment and facilities. g. Advise administration and recommend policy, methods or procedural changes. h. Evaluate assigned officials and submits timely report as required by MHSAA. i. Establish, announce, maintain and submit team records, statistics and requirements for lettering. j. Coordinate in person all practices, games, and team travel to safeguard each participant. k. Maintains an accurate inventory and is responsible for football equipment. Arrange for issuing, in and out of season storage, cleaning, repair, and re-conditioning of equipment. Properly mark all equipment for identification. Complete end of season inventories. l. Instill in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use. 7. Perform other duties on behalf of LBSD that are consistent with the nature of the position and that may be requested by the Superintendent. a. Understand and follows the proper chain of command and refers requests and grievance through proper channels. d. Scheduling and requirements for state series competition. e. Assist college-bound athletes in their college or advanced educational selection. Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited University or College. Master Degree preferred. Strong communication skills. Ability to speak and write clearly and cogently. Excellent interpersonal skills; possessing good judgment, resolve, and compassion. Ability to represent the school in personal encounters and public settings. Well organized and self-directed.
